We went to Yellowstone 2 years ago and it's awesome. We stayed in the park and I'd highly recommend it as it greatly decreases your time driving. That said it's all dry camping so you have to have a good battery and generator or solar. We stayed in bridge Bay and Madison campground. Of the two Madison was nicer overall .. many of the spots at bridge Bay were in a big field. We got lucky at bridge Bay with a gorgeous spot though overlooking the lake but where they put you is luck of the draw.
