I can match your 50 years with 52 years, but the 500K you might have me there. With you in the Minneapolis area that takes some doing to average 10K a year!
Brings back memories. I used a laptop in the car running Delorme Street Atlas with a satellite antenna plugged into the RS232 port. It was cumbersome but it worked. I think the first stand alone GPS I put in the car was a Magellan unit that had an sd card with the "maps" that you had to but separate and a "flip up anmtenna". It was far better than juggling the laptop with an antenna sliding all over the dash.
