Problem Fixed
Well in case anyone else ever has this issue, my husband found and fixed the problem.
Someone or somehow the sofa sleeper must have been open/closed the wrong way or without the right support. The two bolts on the inside of the arms that stop the lower half of the bed from over extending were sheared off. My husband removed the arms from the sofa and replaced the bolts. Seems to have taken care of the issue.
