With DEF cheap as it is and the long time between refills, it seems kind of weird to even try something like that, especially if a warranty is involved.

DEF is 67% deionized water 33% urea! I would let that guy be the guinea pig on running straight water then check back with him in 50k miles & see the results.
I had a '05 duramax when the newer ones came out using DEF, I had one of "those" guys tell me "pour a jug of that DEF stuff in your tank, that thing would really run then" to which I said "yep! for about a minute, DEF is 68% water" he says "OH!".
