DEF has nothing to do with DPF regeneration. It is sprayed into the SCR to reduce NOx emissions. Since NOx emissions increase with engine heat, you use more of it while towing.
DPF regens use diesel fuel sprayed into the exhaust to burn off soot accumulation from the DPF.
