GM driveline experiences

We bought our 2500hd as the second owners. it had about 1000 miles left on the 3/36 warranty. From the first day we owned it, there was a driveline gear whine I attributed to it being ‘Heavy Duty’...Dad’s 86 1-ton made similar noises.

We had a huge snowstorm a few weeks back and after a day of 4-wheelin’ and rescuing people, the truck sounded a bit hurt. Metal on metal rubbing while in 4Hi...Gm gives 3/4 and 1-ton trucks a 5 year 100,000 driveline warranty. Called the dealership, took it in, and at 61k miles, the transfer case was overhauled (broken tooth on the sun gear, replaced planetary gearset, two bearings, and a bearing or two in the rear diff, plus labor) all at GM’s expense.

Got the truck back and that ‘gear whine’ I’d always just assumed was Heavy Duty GM was gone. I guess it’s never been quite right. Now it is, and it’s smooth and quiet...I’m impressed and a little pissed at the previous owner who must have hurt it, swore under his breath, and offloaded it to the next guy.

Anyone else experience driveline issues with GMs, or am I luckily (warrantee) unlucky?
