Looks like a good solution. I had the same issue on my Cougar within the first year of getting it. I ended up using a slightly larger sheet metal screw and it took care of it.

It's good you got it working. Did you happen to turn the external switch off when you had it apart? I believe the external switch has to be off in order for the gas to fire up.

I'm pretty sure the X chocks will work for you. They can close up pretty tightly for narrow spacing. We use them on our 26SAB.
