When in motion detector mode (blue led flashing) it will light up at night only when it senses motion. Mine works fine once I swapped the polarity.

Did this mod last summer. I would highly recommend it. And the complete kit is the way to go. The shackles are much heavier grade and the ability to grease the bolts is a big big plus.
