2013 raptor velocity 310TS (king bed version)

Hello All! I'm a newbie so please excuse my ignorance :) Need advice on what tow vehicle we need to pull the raptor we are looking at. We have never towed anything with our F150, so we are entering new territory. Hubby doesn't want a dually because he thinks it will be impractical to drive on a semi-weekly basis. I agree with him, however I just want to make sure a SRW can handle our load. We are looking at Dodge Laramie 3500 and Ford F350. Also need opinions on hitches. Ford offers the hitch prep package. Yay or nay? Here are the specs that I could find on the raptor velocity 310TS (not sure if they are fudged because I got them from a couple dealer sites):

Shipping weight: 13,297
Carry capacity: 3395
Hitch: 3000
Length: 36'6"
Width: 8'6"

I do not know about the Dodge towing prep pkg. but the Ford pkg. has a FW prep with the hitch and the connector on the left side of the bed. It also has brake controller, anti sway control, anti lock system that includes the trailer.With the F350 you can get either the 6.0 Power Stroke or the 6.8,10 cylinder gas engine. They have good deals at this time 0% for 5 years (if qualified). P.S. I have been a Ford man for the last 45 years and worked for dealers for 35.:)

With 3000lb pin weight (I assume that's dry weight?), you may find you may need a dually to get that much cargo capacity

I have a 2012 F350 Lariet Crew-Cab Long-Bed Single-Rear-Wheel Diesel (that's a lot to type), and my stated payload capacity is 3053lbs. I haven't yet weighed it with wife, full tank, and cargo to see what that drops down to. Then you have to allow for carrying propane, battery, water, 5th wheel hitch, etc, which will add to your dry pin weight.

I'm doing it the other way round - I have the truck (which I absolutely love by the way), and am looking for a fifth wheel. I will probably assume I will add 500lbs to the dry pin weight. So with passenger and cargo, and loaded trailer I most likely am limited to a dry pin weight of around 2300lbs. I'm eying the Keystone Alpine's.

So give some serious thought to single vs. dually wheels. It makes a huge difference in payload capacity.

I have a 6.0 Ford SRW with bags. It pulls my 300mp Raptor well enough but I'd like to see the difference with a DRW.

Thank you so much for your input. Mr. Andy, those Alpines sure are pretty. Once our 4 kids are up and out, we may want to ditch the TH and settle down with something a little more "grown up", ha ha :)

The payload is exactly why I was thinking the SRW wouldn't quite be enough truck to handle so much weight. However, it's rumored that the new dodge 3500's will lead the industry in payload and towing capacity. So....maybe we will have to wait and see what they come up with and do a head to head comparison with Ford. It's tough to veer away from Ford since our F150 has been so good to us. We have had it 11 years and 191,000 miles later its still running strong! T11, glad to hear your Ford handles the weight. I guess we could always give it a try with the bags to smooth out the ride.

Lori, you scared me at first, I thought you were going to ask if the F150 would work. Any way with your own numbers for shipping weight and cargo cap, you're over 16600 for a gross, if you take the average (I know THers run a little different) 20% of gross for pin puts you in 3300 area. Depending on what you also put into the back of the TV plus passengers (both 2 and 4 legged) I think you'll be cutting it awful close. Once you get used to the "Hips" on a Dually they are just as easy to drive and you'll be all set for that next bigger rig and as a rule aren't much more that the SRW 350s and very little if any difference in Fuel mileage. Good luck and don't be afraid to seriously consider a Dually.

Thanks MHS! I'm totally for the dually. I've convinced my hubby to take a gander at the new Ram 3500's (when they eventually hit the dealer lot) because to me, I think the new look is awfully purrrrdy, well, as pretty as a dually can be :) Thanks again for the reassurance.

Well, Cummins wrote the book on diesel - drove them for years as a commercial driver - so, I guess there's nothing wrong with Mopar - if you can live with less torque, less HP and less fuel mileage;)

Looking at he Cummins web sight they state they have two HP versions on the 6.7 A 610 ft. lb for the standard transmission and a 800 ft. lb. for a auto trans.

Dodge has an option for the Highoutput Cummins at 800 lb. ft. torque. with the exhaust brake tow-haul mode options. The 2012 Cummins does not use Ureia exhaust treatment on the DPF to burn off diesel particulates. So I'm not looking for Ureia at the fuel stop.

I have the 2012 Ram 2500 HP highout motor. the OEM stated pin weight is 2540 lbs.

O... the 2013 Dodge Ram was name Motor Trends 2013 truck of the year. Guess I sould have waited.

Thanks Avofarmer :) Yeah I think we are going to wait for the ram 3500's to come out and then do a side by side comparison. The Fords definitely look more rugged and beefy, but I like the luxurious feel of the Ram (especially the nice rear fender over the dually wheels). I'm looking forward to making a decision soon so we can get our TH and start living more life on the road! :)
