Air Bag/ Air Springs

I have a 1500 GMC Crew Cab Short Box Pulling a Keystone Passport 285RL. I would like to put Air Bags / Air Lift Kit for the rear end of my GM. Is Air Lift Co. a good one? If not any ideas? My GM hauls pretty good, but it would be nice to have a little more support:) Thanks, S.MAC.:)

Air Lift and Firestone get about equal reviews over on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Super Duty forum. I'm planning to add air bags in the spring and haven't made a firm decision yet. It may come down to price in the end.

I have Firestone on mine but for no particular reason other than this is my third pair and they have never let me down.

Either way you go, I am sure you will like the results.

We settled on the Air Lift 1000's for that same reason, and it was little outlay to see if we like them($112 shipped within Canada). If we do and they ever fail, we can decisde up upgrade to the HD Firestone bags, or simply replace a cheap Air Lift bag.

I have a 2005 Dodge 1500 Ram pulling a 331 Sprinter. I put the HD Firestone bags with the dual controls, onboard compressor, and resevoir tank. It was an amzing difference in balancing/leveling the truck and camper, keeping my headlights at the normal level, and actually cut down on the swaying quite a bit. Had it on 3 years now with no issues. Bought it from Helwig.

I have a set of the Firestone airbags on my F350 4X4 from when I owned
a cab over camper. I plan on removing them since not needed with the
current TT.

I have had success with AirLift brand bags in my two TVs, and the price point is lower than Firestone. Either brand should serve you well. :)

Are they a do it yourself project. I have read that getting the bags in the springs can be difficult.

VERY much do it yourself.
I would suggest looking over the parts and instructions prior to installation; having them in front of you makes everything seem easier, and one of the accessories can be of questionable quality (the plastic barbed 'Tee' to tee the lines together can be replaced with a $3 brass unit which will never break).

Most truck have leaf springs in the rear these days. An uninflated air bag slips right into place with no trouble. Not sure where you picked up that bit of info, but I think it's misleading.

Your GMC 1500 will have leaf spring rear suspension, which is easier to install the air bag kits on. The coil spring rear suspensions are on the 1500 series SUVs such as Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, etc...

I've installed both and the coil spring versions, while DIY capable, are more involved as you have to lower the rear axle enough to pull the springs out. Then, installing air bags into the middle of the springs it tough and requires a something to pry with (that won't puncture bags) and some WD-40. That's the hardest part really.

You should have rear coils. My comment about having leaf springs on the GMC 1500 was meant for the OP. Sorry for any confusion there.
