Water heater question

What is the purpose of leaving the plug out of the water heater after winterizing?

??? I'd guess so bugs can get in and use it for their winter home ???? :D


Never really gave it much thought, but if the plug is out, there's a better chance that it will evaporate any water left standing below the drain plug. I always use my wet/dry vac and a piece of windshield washer hose to vaccuum it all out and then put the plug back in. Whenever you do put yours back in, make sure to use teflon tape on it or it will corrode and be much harder to get out next year when you winterize. (that is assuming you have the metal plug with the anode rod attached.)

Thanks, for the answer. I put some tape on it and put it back in today. Of course, I will have to re-winterized when I get back home. My dealer told me to leave it out for winter but I just didn't know why.

I've never heard of any requirement to leave it in or leave it out. I just put mine back in so it doesn't get lost. That probably wouldnt happen with the plastic sheeting covering the door and the tape around it as well, but what the heck, one less thing to do in the spring LOL

It seemed like a good way to loose it to me. Kind of like the need of putting your tools back in the drawer.

My kids are in their 30's and they have yet to comprehend that.... Of course, my DW loves to "pick up after me" and her idea of putting things away (at least my things) is "out of sight out of mind" so there's no telling where I might find my tools "stored" but seldom are they in the right drawer.....

after i drain the hot water tank i squirt some antifreeze in the tank then (with tephlon tape) put the plug back in. and put everthing away. As with John my dw also puts my stuff away :eek: and i can never find it.:xmas14::xmas3:

Oh I find it, Barney. But it's usually a couple of weeks to a few months after I needed it. And then it's most often when she tells me that there's no more room in "her" storage drawer and I need to get my stuff out of her space. Sad part is, I never put it there to begin with, but as in your house, it's still my fault. <sigh> :banghead:

I never leave mine out but I never truly winterize either here in Florida.

I take my plug out an put a 1/4 in brass ball valve in its place so all I have to do is open the valve to drain. They do make one drain with a anode rod an spin out drain valve but I still change it for my brass ball valve. To get the water out in fall I us my air compressor an blow all the lines an hot water heater out before I pump in the pink stuff. But I never put pink in my water heater. Good luck.
