Welcome to the forum. You might consider going to this website to find out information about the towing capabilities and capacities of trucks: www.trailerlife.com
From their homepage, click on "Vehicles" >>>>>> click on "Tow Ratings".
This site will provide you with accurate information about the tow rating of your vehicle.
If you go to the Keystone website you might find some details about the Cougar 327RES in the description about standard equipment, construction, or specs sections.

Cougar's advertised hitch weight for that trailer is 1580 lb. which I don't understand since it is the biggest Cougar made and smaller units are considerably more. That said, you will be very close to the limits of your truck with a 12000 lb. gross weight trailer. My 290RK is 10000 gvw and 1350 hitch and and my 04.5 handles it fine. I would question the hitch weight of that trailer unless they slide the axles forward ... this is a possibility since it does have 16" E rated tires. Excuse me I'm thinking out-loud.

You need to provide more information on your truck. I checked out the Dodge Builder web site for a 2004 trucks and this list two different engines for diesels. Such as the 24V I6 and the 24V HO I6? There are several other question that needs to be answered such as is this a REG cab, Quad Cab, wheel base, auto or manual and rear end gear ratio? This will determine if you can safely tow this camper with your truck. Another area to look at is the weight sticker on your truck. This will provide information such as the max Front Axle weight, Rear Axle weight, Truck Gross weight and combined vehicle gross weight. I would also see if the dealer will weight this camper for you to determine if you can tow this unit.
I ran my 318SAB with my 2008, Mega Cab 2500HD, CTD with and Auto 3.73 rear end, across a scale and these are my weights.
Front Axle 4940 LBS, Rear Axle 5160 LBS, Trailer Axle 8140 LBS and the Gross combined weight is 18,240 LBS .
Here is the site for the Dodge builder web site. http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2004/intro.pdf

PS. For other Dodge owners just change out the year to get your information.

This unit has electric landing gear. I'm pulling with a 2010 2500HD Duramax and it has no problems handling it. After my wife loaded it, I need to find a scale and see how much overweight it is.

2004, 2500 ctd 4x4 longbed 4.10 rear end does that help? quad cab

2004 dodge ram heavy duty pickup 2500 SLT, QUAD CAB, 4WD, 8.0 FT Bed, 4-Speed Automatic Transmission, 5.9L 24V Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine:

With 3.73 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 9850 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 9000 lbs
Payload [i] = 2023 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 6977 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 4300 lbs/4300 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 5200 lbs/6000 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 17000 lbs

With 4.10 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 11850 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 9000 lbs
Payload [i] = 2023 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 6977 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 4300 lbs/4300 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 5200 lbs/6000 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 19000 lbs

These are the numbers for the 04 standard output engine 305hp. The HO engine may be a little higher 325hp.

I believe there is an "Equipment identification sticker" on the under-side of the hood. It should give paint color, axle ratio and engine. The 325hp is an HO or a 610 (which is the torque output) if it is not there give your vin # to a Dodge dealer and they can tell you.
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/ is another site that might help.

Great website, but found my MegaCab seems to be lacking in the payload department (2116lbs), So I am looking at a 2010 Cougar 318sab. Should be able to handle it. Was looking at the 327res but it seems like it would be a bit too much to handle.... What you all think?

Thanks,

I am pulling that model of camper (318SAB) with a 2008, 2500HD, 6.7L CTD, 6spd auto, 3:73 gears, 4X4 with a Mega Cab.
My weight numbers across a "CAT Certified Truck Scale for this combination are:
Front Axle 4940 Lbs, Rear Axle 5160 Lbs, Trailer Axles 8140 LBS and the Gross Combine Weight is 18,240 Lbs. I was fully loaded except for water and waste fluids, as I normal do not carry them. I usually do not fill my fresh water tank unless I need to and then I do this at the camp ground. That extra weight will eat up your fuel mileage.
I believe you should be alright with towing a 318SAB Cougar 5er.

No, I am running with out air bags. I have checked the truck three different times when I have the 5er hook-up. I even placed a level in the bed and the bed is level with the 5er attached.
I think the pin weight is a little over 1,700 LBS. This is based on a 15 % load placed on the hitch by the 5er. Even if the 5er pin weight was 20% of the total weigth of the camper. I believe I would still be under my max weight ratings on the truck.
The total wieight of the camper per Keystone is 11,660 Lbs and a 20% pin weight is 2,332 Lbs. This is only 583 Lbs more that would be placed on the rear and front axles of the truck.
Good luck
Jim

Hi Outback Mac, I bought a 327RES in July2010, and so far Have realy enjoyed it, except the books provided are very vague. But the landing legs are electric and they should of gave you a crank for manual override. Im still looking for the water pump. I think its behind the panel in the passthru storage. Hope this helps and if you find the water pump let me know:D
