For those of you who live in Ohio & Pennsylvania, or those of you who have traveled through the area I have a question:

We will be traveling across country and coming from Vermont on our way to California. We want to stop in Amish country and get the "full Amish experience". Where do you suggest we go; Ohio, Pennsylvania, ?. What should we see, where should we stay, where should we be sure to stop/shop.

Please help!! "bouncey:

We used to camp, a long time ago and with a much smaller camper, at Oak Creek Campground near Bowmansville, PA. Loved it!

Check out a local Amish food market. I still remember the fresh sausage! Best I ever had!

We head out to Lancaster PA almost every weekend when we are not taking a long trip. We stay at White Oak Campground in Quarryville. This is just outsude of Strasburg. Watch out for horse/buggies...they are all over this area....esp Sat night, Sun AM, and Sun night. Nice CG....Very good people here. Recommend section with sites 7 and sites in 20s. Site 105 and 132 are nice also.

Things to see/do:
Strasburg.....Strasburg Railroad. Real RR ride. Very good RR museum....and not model trains! Creamery in heart of Strasburg...rt 896 and and 741 intersection. They make their own ice cream and cones. Excellent. Check out Sight and Sound on the web...in Strasburg. They put on very grand plays based on the Bible...very popular. Eat at Hershey's restaurant...not the chocolate place. You will not leave hungry.

You are not far from rt 30..and the commercial outlets and restaurants. Look up Amish Experience on the web....very good. Excellent shopping in Intercourse..intersection of rt 340 and 742....Kettle Village....lots of shops. Down from 340 on 772 is King's Country Korner.....good shopping there....everything from Amish made furniture (very well made with solid wood) to candles, lamps, rocking chairs, nick nacks...def worth a visit. Peaceful Valley on rt 340 is Great...a def must stop also for shopping......Amish furniture, crafts, etc. Excellent buys available! Bird in Hand....there is a small bakery across from farmers mrkt. Bakery I am referring to has an ice cream window out front. Excellent pies and cakes. Either whole or by the slice. Can get some goo PA Dutch desserts there. The farm market is across the street. Both are worth a visit. Nice stores in Bird in Hand down the street from the bakery.

Just drive the backroads in the area you will see working farms, no mechanized equipment. Horse drawn farm equipment only. Remeber....everything Amish is closed on Sundays.

No need to got into Lancaster city proper.....

Check out our website ...link below.....and go to 2012 trips...weekend getaways. Chk the July 27 weekend...pic of countryside is from a site at White Oak. Pics of rainbows are from the road (rt 896) that takes you to White Oak CG. There are several trips to White Oak logged this yr on our website.

You have excellent feedback....enjoy. Traveling thru Amish community, we spotted a kitchen table and chairs we could not live without. We bought and paid. Took a month to build and ship to us BUT, the quality, now 6 years old, is one step above fantastic. It was not cheap, nor was shipping cheap. We received the set in impeccable condition. We love this set. We also have a all wood Amish bookcase, 20 years old, looks new. The cuts and fits are a thing of beauty. These craftsmen walk the talk.
