I am currently shopping for new insurance for my new Passport 2650BH. My current insurance does not cover my camper while in any campground! Only while in transport, WHAT? I am asking around and requested some quotes but am open to any suggestions. If anyone has any input, good or bad, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

jaydeb, Howdy;

I use GEICO. They know I live (fulltime), in it.
No problems. Had to file a claim when my gray
tank froze and split (it was -40 that night), in
my old ('95), TT. They asked where I wanted to
have it repaired and if I wanted it towed there.
Told them where, when the quote came in they
sent a check minus the deductable. No fuss no muss,
and no big bump in rates .... :-)

I use Progressive who has my home and auto insurance. Around $150 a year, full replacement value coverage since it's a new trailer. Have not filed any claims on this or previous trailer but have used the road side assistance for blown tire and towing with nothing more than a signature.

We use wawanesa for everything cars, rv, bikes (we bundle) The other thing is you have to pay 12months at a time. Not 6. And AAA just for towing. Cheapest we have found so far.

Compare Progressive and GEICO. Both offer similar coverage and great prices.

I became a Progressive customer when I bought my pop up in 2003 and have used them ever since. I had one claim with them and they were in my driveway ASAP to inspect the damage and cut a check. Their renewal process is simple and can be done online.

Full disclosure - I am a licensed P&C agent in Pennsylvania but do not sell. I am, however, very in tune with insurance products and can tell you their RV coverage is first rate.

Good luck!

If you have a different carrier for the TV and TT are there complications for a claim?

Nope. If both are involved in a collision you file two separate claims. Most of the time, the RV is damaged while stationary (while camping or while in storage).

I have Progressive for full replacement value. We just switched everything to USAA so at renewal I will move the camper there for the multi discount. Never made a claim.

We have moved all our vehicles to USAA and saved about $1,000 every six months over Geico.

Dealing with USAA customer service is frustrating and I really miss Geico in that respect. We agreed to lower the deductable on the TT and the rep went ahead and lowered the deductable on all of our veicles. Then every time we called back to try to get that fixed (Yes, it actually took much more than one call), we were given different information. Still, for almost $2,000 a year in savings, we just deal with it.

I have only started one claim with USAA on the TT and actaully cancelled it. Having said that, the experience up to cancelling it was very good. The Rep at USAA was very nice. USAA contracted claim management to a company called fleet management or something and they were very nice and competent as well.

From what I was told on the phone, USAA uses Progressive and Geico for camper insurance. I haven't had a claim with them yet but they saved us a TON of money on homeowners and vehicles when we switched this summer and we got more and better coverage. Hopefully we never need to make a claim...

My experience with submitting a claim with them was good.

It was the general customer service or account management process that we have had numerous problems with.

We had a terrible time on a claim with Progressive with our last camper. We ended up loosing lots of $$ as they denied the claim. We tried to appeal at no avail. When we bought the Keystone and dropped Progressive, they tried to change their tune on the appeal. Sorry - too late - Never again.

They came highly recommended and of course we never had a problem until we needed them.

From what I have been told, it is best to have different carriers for TT and TV. Reasoning behind it is (as an example) if you have an awning claim on your TT it could increase your auto coverage. I don't know how true that is or if it is possibly related to multiple TT claims, but I didn't want to take the chance. The way insurance companies are, I figured it was highly likely. Sometimes I feel like insurance companies rate right up there with lawyers. I have National Interstate for my TT. Thankfully I have not had to use it. Hopefully if I ever do, they will do right by me.

Been with USAA for many years, and had a TT claim a couple of years ago(plugged my new trailer into a plug at the house I thought was 110v.. it was re wired several years ago for the generator, 220v). My mistake, but USAA paid for the $3500 in damages anyway(tx) Only problem may be that you have to be military, a veteran, or directly related to either to qualify with them.

Run dont walk to the nearest other rv coverage you can find...We have had National Interstate/Explorer RV Insurance for the past 10 yrs on our 2004 Rockwood...when we went to open the camper in April after a bad winter here in Indiana, we found the vinyl on our floor split in multiple places. We decided to replace the floor ourselves and pulled up the vinyl. We found massive amounts of black mold all over the floor in my kitchen. Upon closer look, the cover on the vent in the kitchen cracked and allowed all the melted snow in the camper..We made a claim for the damage on April 4, 2014..6 wks later, we are still waiting...they sent the first adjuster out a week after claim was made...He told us he believed it was a total loss..a week after that the claims person at National Interstate called us and confirmed that they were going to total the trailer and they were deciding on a money amount...a week after that they called and said they have changed their minds and didn't like what the adjuster had to say and denied the claim. After I threw a fit, she agreed to send out another adjuster for a second opinion...He came to the camper, took 5 or 6 pictures...didn' even look at the place where the water came in and left...that was a week ago. and we still have no answers...I will never use or recommend National Interstate...They are crooks...

My wife is in the insurance business, and employed by a very large company based in Illinois. She has said many, many times that you get what you pay for. Also, your coverage is only as good as your local agent. You would be amazed at the stories she has concerning many of these "name brand, discount" insurance companies.

She has had clients take their coverage to the "cheaper" insurers, and then call her when they have a claim problem. Because she is good-natured to a fault, the soft spot in her heart often helps these folks with claim problems, even when it's with another insurance company.

If you have a good, reputable, local agent to go to bat for you, your claim headaches will be non-existent. That is, providing your claim is legit and you aren't having unreasonable expectations.

I decided its time to jump in on this thread. I have Country Financial (Illinois Farm Bureau) on all my vehicles (TT and TV's as well). I have not had any issue with claims on either the TV's or the TT in fact they have been extremely good about handling claims. If I had a claim against the TT or a TV, the rates on the other vehicles did not go up.

For those in Illinois or anywhere else Country Financial is available, I do recommend them.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll share my 2 cent.
X2 on a good local agent. I have my home, auto, & trailer through Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and while my rates are a tad bit higher then some of the other quotes I have looked at to me it is worth a few $ to be able to pick up the phone & get the answers & help I need from a real live person who lives & works in my community & knows us.
