View Full Version : Hot weather storage

Contemplating not being able to use our 5er for about 3 or 4 mos.
Washed and covered with a Tyvex cover - drained the fresh water system and blown out with air - drained waste tanks and flushed black tank until water was clear - filled and dumped again
Having read the interesting posts regarding the DBP:eek: Should we store the trailer with some water and chemicals in the black tank or just leave it empty?
I should add that we have triple digit temps here in the Valley.
Thanks in advance for your expertise.:)

If you have cleaned the tank as well as you say there should be no problem with hardening waste. My concern would be with seals drying out and water evaporation from traps. I use a SEAL LUBRICANT (http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/thetford-toilet-seal-lubricant-26-oz-/31207) when I winterize so if the liquid evaporates the bowl remains sealed and fumes from tank does not enter trailer. With the temperatures that you mention I am not sure how to stop evaporation in the traps. Perhaps a small amount of vegetable oil with water in the traps MIGHT prevent this. Maybe someone from hot climate has had experience with this problem. Even gray tanks can bring smells into a stored trailer.

I knew I should have left the oil thing for someone else. Festus2 has probably already seen it and is just honing his witty answer so he doesn't just step in it like I usually do. Come on Rich, let me have it ..... by the way, witty was not a typo. :D

Thanks for the response (tx)- I guess I was thinking more about the seals than anything - good point about the traps -I hadn't thought about them drying out - all good info and gave some of the other members a chance to have some fun"bouncey: - you guys are something else! Great forum

Howdy All;

My only reply to chuck & gail's comment in the 2ed. link;
" Asked wife what was a more expensive oil like coconut oil. She said her extra virgin olive oil was very expensive, so I tried it on toilet seal. Problem fixed in a week by letting maybe 1/2 cup sit on top of seal! I now use normal olive oil to lube waste tanks, and toilet, seals. No sense wasting extra virgins. Oh and toilet seal has held water fine ever since. Only a few years so far, but seems to make waste valves easier to operate also." (My addition of color).

There are NO 'extra' virgins.... only what is issued ...Nothing more.....

Azlee56 -

Actually, the olive oil in the tank is a good idea to lubricated the seals. All the rest, well ... Just having fun! :rofl:

any oil or just olive oil and this is down the toilet and sinks right? I was going to empty my fresh water but was kind of afraid it would dry up with the heat here. So it is better to leave water in them?

Definitely empty the fresh water ..... we don't want that turning into a swamp. The other holding tanks are the ones with seals on the dump valves.
