cleaning a water heater

Has anyone tried to clean the hot water heater tank? i replaced my anode this week and noticed i had a lot of buildup in the tank i also replaced the heating element as i figured to 10 bucks it was cheap insurance to keep the wife happy.but i did notice the element had a white hard crusty film on it as well. i flushed out the tank with a garden hose but still seam to have a build up in the tank.

I had same issue when I removed my anode rod, about 2 cups of white sediment with pepper looking pieces. I tried the water hose but seemed to not get much out. I then shoved a hose into the hole to the back and got most if not all of it out. Took about 20 minutes of moving the smaller hose all around but it forced out the grit. hope that helps. you could use a water hose and just cut off one end to be able to cram it into the hole. If you are like me, you have a few "damaged" hoses around.

Brown vinegar and a stiff toothbrush or small stainless, copper or brass brush. The vinegar is acidic (no, it won't hurt the metal unless left on for weeks) and dissolves the mineral deposits. Squirt a bunch in, let sit a few minutes, scrub, flush, do it again as needed.
Also great for removing water spots/film from chrome bath fixtures and water spots on glass/windshields.
Also great for removing the white/green/blue corrosion deposits around battery posts...but keep it out of the cells.

Glad this post showed up...I've been curious why my water heater had so much crud in it...
