Was wanting to know ball size for a 2012 Cougar 24rls TT? Also am towing unit home without my WD hitch ( only a few miles) and wanted to know what height I should have my ball on when I pick it up? I have a 2inch drop hitch do I want to turn it upside down so the ball will be 2-3" higher than my hitch or leave it 2" lower. I have a Reese SC hitch on order so don't really want to buy a adjustable ball mount or a new receiver insert.

Hi Sorry about your loss also, I had a trailer business at one time and rule of thumb was generally around 18-19" top of ball. Have fun with the new unit and Happy Campin..........Ron

Hello arcticcatred,

for your own safety and everyone you drive by you should get the
propper equilizer hitch from your dealer. I'm very surprised that 5
others replied to your thread and no one else, especially us pulling
larger units never picked up on this.it only takes 1 time to be in crosswind or hit a rolling road for use to loose everything.please
have a good day and drive safely.

The ball size will be 2 5/16" not 2 3/8" as posted above. Since you just have a few miles to tow it home, about 20" to top of ball will be close enough. When you get er home you can set everything up correctly.

Howdy All;

The standard size for TT's 2 5/8ths. inch. There ARE various weight ratings for those balls. Find one that is stronger then your TT's weight...

As for height. Get the TT level. Measure the height of the TOP of the ball-socketfrom the ground. Then see how far it is from the top of your ball to the ground. I'd (This is ME , personnaly), would look to have the top of the ball 4 inches higher then the TT's ball socket. Things should, hopefully even out after you hook up........ This is ONLY my opinion...
Your's may vary.....

I think you will find that 2 5/16 is the correct size for most TTs

Different heights? If you mean hitch height, then, yes, but not much. However, you want the trailer to sit level while towing, so you’ll need to find the trailer’s hitch height, then get a drop (or rise) hitch that’ll get you to that height. If it’s *just* for that short ride home, then it’s not that critical.
