Does the TV/WiFi switch above the fireplace (at least in a 26BHWE) do anything if you don't have the separate Winegard Gateway router installed? If not, should I just leave it 'off' and turn the TV booster 'on' when I want to watch TV?

Can't help with the WIFI operation, but to watch tv from the antenna that booster switch must be "on" & "off" for cable/satellite viewing. Also you must go to the tv setup menu, chose input (antenna or cable), then scan channels, this must be done every time you relocate or switch inputs.
