remote control system with no remote transmitter

Hi Guys,

We purchased this rig (a Copper Canyon 252FWRLS) a couple years ago used, and just recently discovered that it came with a remote control system for several electro-mechanical functions. The problem is, it didn't come with a remote (unless it's hidden somewhere that we haven't looked yet).

Some time early during last week's camping trip, while we were out in it, the security light came on without activating the switch on the switch panel. In fact I can completely disconnect the switch and the light stays on, so it has to be the remote system that's turned it on, right?

I am hoping that if I just disconnect the top left wire from the control receiver (next to the "LIGHT" label) the light should go off, but I'm unclear of the meaning of the label for the wires below it so don't want to guess.

I talked to Lippert about it and it would "only" cost me about $700 in parts to update everything just to have a remote. I'm not inclined to go that direction, but if someone has a remote in a drawer that they don't have a trailer to go with, please let me know! :)

Can you not determine the model of the control panel, the remote that goes with it then order one? Lippert has a pretty good informational website.

I sent Lippert a picture of it and they told me that I can't get a replacement remote for it. Would have to buy a whole new system.

All I really want to do is turn off a light and $700-ish is a little steep for that!

I'll have to talk to them, thanks! That specific one is sold out but they may have something else that'll work.

I would just like to get some assurance from knowledgeable people about whether or not a specific remote will work with my system (there are programming instructions on the receiver......are all of the remotes programmable??), or a new (affordable, like the one you pointed to) system will work OK with my trailer.

I agree with the EBay recommendation. You can buy a "complete new remote system" or often find a "serviceable remote handheld unit" for very reasonable prices....

In the meantime, you can "turn off the light" by removing the power wire to that function. I'd suspect, as you guessed, that removing the upper green/yellow wire will disconnect the light from the remote unit. If it doesn't, then reconnect that wire and move down the terminal, removing one wire at a time until the light is turned off....

Be sure not to touch the wire terminal to ground even if it is disconnected as there will be power on it when you activate the manual switch... So, be sure to wrap the exposed wire terminal end with electrical tape before you close up the compartment.....

As a possible alternative, often times you can completely remove power from the trailer (both shore power and physically disconnecting the battery (not just the battery cutoff switch) and then use a jumper to short out the power input to the remote receiver (to erase any residual memory). That will essentially reset the remote receiver and turn the light off.... When you reconnect the battery and/or plug into shore power, the light "should" remain off.... SHOULD is not always "WILL" so your results may not be what you wish they were...... but, worth a try.

Couldn't sleep in so was up at 6:00 a.m., with a flashlight, looking over the receiver again. There is nothing on it that I could use to identify generation or revision on the board or even who made it (although I assume that it's a Lippert part).

The vinyl label that identifies all of the connections and provides instructions for programming remotes probably covers it all up but at this point I think I'll just leave it alone.

Second wire removed turned the light off, so I taped it up and we're good to go unless I really get an urge for a remote.

I just went through the light staying on issue with my 2010 Cougar SAB. I accidentally turned it on with the remote and didn’t know I had to use the remote to turn it off again. The light went off after I disconnected all power for a day. I don’t know if it would come back on after only a brief disruption? This is the remote for mine.

Since yours is the closest to my vintage, could you possibly post an image of your controller/receiver? There's no s/n or p/n on mine (no ID at all, just labels for the connections and manufacturer's part marking on the components) and I'd like to have some confidence that I'm getting the right part if I decided to buy.

Lippert tells me that I would have to buy the whole system (transmitter and receiver) but I have my doubts about that. Remote capability is really not *~$700 worth* important to me but if I could get a functioning remote for ~$100 I'd probably go for it.

Regards to the battery on yours, I assume it's rechargeable, but no longer taking or
holding a charge for long?

I will be winterizing in the next couple days. I can have a look then. Where is this controller/receiver located? By the battery or by the electrical panel? This is the original battery that I replaced...pretty good life for 10 years!

Yes, I did, thanks. My problem currently is that I still have no idea which one would be correct for my controller.

Everything I've seen here suggests that mine is a different revision or generation of receiver that what people here have and mine may not work properly with the remote that you pointed to. I need a little more information than what I currently have, unfortunately.

Try calling the 1-800 number on the e-trailer site. They may have a knowledgeable person there that could help. Enquire as to whether you can return it if it fails to work? Good Luck.

Steve, check online to see if there is an app for your phone. Our Keystone has a downloadable app (which we use all the time). Do a search for your model and see what pops up.

Is it safe to assume that it's a Lippert?

We've determined that MY system is a GAMA so unless that's the brand on it it won't work for me, but maybe it'll help someone else out. Thanks for the offer, regardless!.

It turns out that one of the remotes that GAMA currently sells works perfectly with my receiver!

It took a couple of emails to find out that the receiver needs to be activated by a button sequence code from the remote before it'll work (all the remote did when I first received it was turn that security light on and off), but after that I have full functionality.

Definitely a better option (for $50) than replacing the whole system! I am a happy camper.
