More than one way to protect your EMS surge protector. Lol We were just lucky, this was fully extended slide, we had less than an inch to spare!

LOL, you definitely want to connect to power before putting your slides out in that scenario.

When I know I'm going to be close to the power pole, or any other obstruction, I break out the tape measure before unhooking from the truck to make sure the slide will open. Sometimes it's that tight

I didn't measure, but should have. Lol I stood back and said" that's about right ". Lucky me!

I know people that carry a dowel the width of the slide plus an inch. Then just walk and see if it hits anything before unhitching.

The dowel is a great idea!

https://www.keystoneforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=251&pictureid=1587[/url] Back in the old days, before everything power and remote, you needed a metal rod with a hook on the end to pull down your awning. We marked that rod with paint for fully extended slide and did a walk around before extending and leveling. You never left home without it and always knew where it was. I'm sure some awnings still use them.

I have a couple of pieces of half inch PVC left over from another project. I am thinking of "dedicating" the pipe to the purpose of a "slide ruler". If that's the case it would be the only slide ruler I know how to use.:D

I have a length of rope cut to the proper length. Just easier to store (for me) than a dowel.

I carry a measuring tape, but didn't use it. Yep, it will be good. I may not be as lucky next time, maybe I should use it. Lol

I can pretty much "judge" and typically I'm within an inch or so parking. What I did make up and have used on rare occasions is some very bright (fluorescent yellow and orange ) poly rope. The rope is the full length of the trailer and I tied perpendicular lengths where the two slide outs extend.

On the few tight spots I've used it on it helped to see if there was room for the slides and leaving it on the ground gave me a site line to back the tires down with a stopping point. I made this after spending about 45 min getting our rig to fit in a ridiculously tight wooded site in Gettysburg, PA on a July 4th. Weekend years ago.

I carry a piece of 1/2" PEX that I have mounted a hook onto the end. It serves multiple uses;

*measure the required space for the extended slide
*reach things in storage
*pull the pool noodle bundle down that helps the topper shed water
*if necessary sacrifice itself to be used repairing the PEX plumbing

Marshall - I use a 4" bright yellow load strap (30' folded in half) as my line of sight when backing at night or in tight spots and when backing into the backyard. I learned this trick from the fire departement 30+ years ago. We had painted lines on the concrete bay floors where the tires lined up and how far back to go to get the tankers and ladder trucks into the bays just right. Roll it up and take it with us every time. sure makes life easy and safe.

I have a 3 foot level, got marks for each of my 3 slides labled on my level. Pull into sight, look at fit, if close walk the level around to see what is left for slides! Then unhook and set up!

I have an automated (but high maintenance) solution - she's called the DW. She goes out, watches, and bangs on the slide if there is any issue...[me ] [her :nonono:]

I have the special DW myself, and she does very well as long as we have phone service, some locations don't. Lots of good information here!!! 😆

I stand with my back against the camper and extend my arm out. Easiest way to do it(assuming your arms are the same length as the width of the slideout)

When I first started driving a car (50 years ago), my dad told me, "An inch is as good as a mile." You didn't hit it.

I pull up next to the pedestal where I think I am OK. Get out of the truck and see if the slide will open as I am currently situated and if not, pull up a bit with my window open and my missus yelling when to stop. Carrying stuff to measure seems overkill if you have a good missus to keep you straight!

I can't think of a specific scenario, but if you ever had an emergency and needed to cut the power to your unit you'd want to be able to quickly get access to flip the breaker.

You are exactly right, never thought of that. I guess I was depending on the EMS to much.
