I just bought a 2016 keystone cougar. When I hit the power button for the radio it powers on for a second and then shuts back off. I’m not sure how to get it to stay on. Any help would be appreciated. It is connected to shore power...

Welcome to the forum:wlcm:

The radio is 12V so it doesn’t need to be plugged into shore power, just a good battery. If there is a reset button near the on/off or volume button, I would press it and see what happens.

What make/model is the radio? Did you try holding the bottom on for a second?

Not sure model. But I will post it when I get it. I held the power button down for a few seconds and it just “cycled” on then off then back on then off again. I will try the reset of it has a reset button.

Was the trailer plugged into shore power or just operating from the battery? If pugged into shore power, it may be the converter or the radio. If you were using the trailer battery only, then probably the battery is either discharged or dead and needs replacing.

Did the trailer lights work OK ???

Yes it was plugged into shore power and all the other lights worked fine. Everything works except the radio. I’m assuming it has power because when I hit the power button it lights up....just doesn’t stay on.

Look for the little hole and put a toothpick in that hole to "reset". If that doesn't work, it's time to pull the radio and start looking for where the "magic smoke" escaped.....

I will do that. Thank you

my 14 Cougar High Country had a Jensen AWM968 like this;

I believe there is a reset button right under the power button....I think. If there are no power issues I'm afraid it might have gone belly up. If so, I think that model has been discontinued and Jensen makes a couple of newer models.

I just purchased a 2007 Keystone Outback and the radio doesn't work. I'm wondering if this is a slide in unit and if I pull on it will it come out in my hands or is it hardwired? Thansk

Welcome to the forum :wlcm:

What brand/ model is your radio? Some look like “dash” radios that slide in and others are held in by screws.

Thanks for the welcome. I don't know anything about the radio yet. I will let you know when I find out. Thank you.

Most of the Jensen radios have either a trim ring you pull off to get to the screws holding the unit in or screws in the trim ring itself. The radios are typically hard wired with wire nuts or crimp fittings. Typically they are double din size radios.

It won't come out in your hands, it's screwed in somehow. Look for a faceplate that pops off, some of them are very cleverly hidden. If you post a model number or photo of your radio unit, somebody here can probably give you its secret handshake.

In the rear, most of the signal connections are RCA or HDMI plugs you can just pop out, the only one that may or may not be a plug is power.

Also, when you say "doesn't work," do you mean no power lights, or just no sound?

I can tell this group is very helpful and I appreciate that. I just bought this unit and haven't even brought it home yet. The owner said the only thing that didn't work was the radio. So, I'm a little premature asking for help. Soon as I get it I'll post what it is and what it does. Thank you guys so much.

There should be a fuse in the power distribution center and most likely an in-line fuse in the wireing harness behind the radio.

Okay the radio is a Jensen model # CD3010X. When you hit the power button nothing at all happens, no lights, no sounds nothing. I pulled the unit and checked the fuse in the rear and it is good. When plugging the wiring harness back in something turns in side very briefly. Everything appears good but it isn't. Do you think I could take this to a car stereo shop and they could tell me whether it is good or bad?

Thanks

I don’t know of any car stereo shop that would mess with or have knowledge about a 6 yr old rv stereo. If they did a repair would likely cost more than a replacement. Have you looked at asaelectronics.com ? They are the folks that make the Jensen brand. They probably have a manual for it on their website.

I have a 2002 Cougar which came from the factory with an RCA with 5 disk changer and dual cassette deck. Don't know if you are old enough the remember cassette tapes (they cam just after 8-tracks). Anyway, folks told me to "look at taking off the face plate" and the like. Turns out I took off the wood panel under my entertainment center and Keystone had run some Roberson head screws up through the bottom of the entertainment center and into the plastic chassis of the radio part and did the same for the speakers.

Since the CD changer didn't work and I can't find where I stored my cassettes I bought a similar sized Sony stereo and replaced the RCA. One thing I noticed about this old-style unit is that it has a "DEMO" mode where nothing works if it is in that mode; the LED just cycles through all the functions to advertise them. If there is no reset, perhaps there is a DEMO function that needs turned off.

Thanks for your input wiredgeorge. I pulled my unit out this afternoon to check the fuse and just see if there was anything obvious. It does have a reset button which I'll try after I reinstall it. I don't mind buying a new replacement unit for this one but how do I know the wiring will match up? I have a wiring diagram now so I can check the hot wire and the ground. Thank you.

After 8 years it may have given up. Without any info on the make & model of the trailer, much less the radio, it's difficult to render any idea other than a generic wild guess. Some radios have speaker selector buttons that must be selected for the speakers to work, some radios have a factory reset switch. Without more info that's about all I can offer.

Thanks for the info, I will get the model today on it. After reading some of the threads it may be as simple as resetting it. The radio works just no sound.

My 2014 radio (in a Cougar) has a speaker selector (A B or C), a mute switch, a volume control, a fade control, a balance control all of which could, if adjusted incorrectly, cause no speaker output. Then there's the function selector which could be on a function other than the radio AM or FM.

Then, with many trailers having been in winter storage for the past several months and the prevalence of "mouse damage", there's always the possibility that the radio is OK but the speaker wires have been used as winter snacks or winter bedding.
