Ideas to secure your RV

There have been several posts lately about stolen RV's. This morning KSL in Salt Lake reports a stolen motorhome low speed chase with slide extended and dragging power cord.

Apparently even the crooks are paying attention to the value of RV's. Time to do a better job of locking up/disabling our RV's when parked. Make it more difficult to steal.

I've noted on my 251 RBSWE that when I'm plugged in, my jack still works even though I have an after market disconnect switch on the battery cable.
What are you guys doing to better secure your RV when parked?

Mine is behind the lolcked fence in my side yard, I do have a kingpin lock.There are several different brands of hitch locks, and I would think just having AYTHING is better than nothing. If the thief(s) really want your RV they are going to get it. I agree that making it more difficult will haver them looking for an easier target.

I was a full time auto theft Det for 6 years in PDX. We were the go and arrest the crooks not the take the stolen report group. 12 of us recovered 5030 stolen vehicles, made hundreds of arrests. Learned about national sats and even had extra training on nation wide and regional thefts and investigations. A TT or 5th wheel RV are very low on the radar to be stolen. Motorhomes are a different story. Many Rvs get broken into, few get stolen. For many reasons, mainly how does Joe dirt bag steal it. He cannot tow it with his junker car. And what is he going to do with it once he as it.
I and we recovered as I recall about 10 motorhomes and 2 5th wheels. We got a full print out everyday of all vehicles stolen throughout the big 3 counties in Oregon and nearby Washington state. The 2 5th wheels, I recovered where theft by fraud.
I can see TTs and 5th wheels being stolen near the southern border to taken into Mexico. I am not really believing your seeing a uptick in people getting their RVs stolen (the pull type).
Be pro active and get a lock on your hitch, it may help. Those do help reduce the theft of cargo and work trailers. Those are another story.

The secret to never getting your 5th wheel stolen is to buy a 2002 Cougar.

As mentioned above, it does seem like towables are stolen a whole lot less than motorhomes. That being said, when my tt is sitting behind the house it has a ball with the threaded shank cut off locked into the hitch. Keeps the guys with bad intent and a pintle hook from getting a grip on it. I do not do this at campgrounds in case there is a fire and it has to be moved. As a note, I was brought up in New York City where everything that was not locked or screwed down was stolen. Nails pull out real fast.

15 years in a patrol area that had many parks with 5 state parks. State parks is what we responded too for police services. Each summer someone would get a genny, bicycle or any other things left laying about at night. Not a big crime wave but it happened a few times a summer.

Our trailer is in a fenced in storage facility with cameras, need a remote to open the gate. I use a kingpin lock, I keep all 4 jacks down. I have a separate disconnect for the leveling system so I can turn it off while the rest of the trailer is powered up.

I have a hitch lock, a lock to go in the pin hole on the latch and a lockable tire chock. But I also keep mine behind our business where it’s in the open and no eyes on it after hours.

I just make sure my insurance premiums are paid before they're due. My policy provides for a new, current model year if my trailer is totaled or declared a complete loss.... Although we do use a king pin lock and when not in use it's parked inside our pole barn, should someone "really want it more than I want it" there's not a lot I can do to prevent them from stealing it... So, I just keep the premiums paid and don't worry about it. After all, it's going on 7 years old and if stolen, I get a new one just like it.... Hmmmmm
