View Full Version : Simple Solution to Prevent Shore Power Cord Damage...

On an enclosed trailer that I previously owned, I installed a small "J" hook on the side of the trailer and used it to hang a piece of rope on that was attached to the shore power cord, to take the strain off of the cord when it was plugged in. I really didn't want to drill into my Momentum and install a hook for the rope, so I came up with this idea. Yea, I don't own a Keystone trailer anymore, but this mod is something that would work on probably almost ANY brand of trailer...and if it helps you with yours, that is what this is all about....so NOT brand specific, just trying to help fellow campers. This mod can save you the cost of the fairly expensive 90 degree connector for your shore power cord.

Get a piece of 1/8" diameter rope and tie a slip knot on one end of it. Slip it over the plug of the shore power cord and slide it down the cord a foot or so. At the other end of the rope, tie a loop (a bowline that won't come loose works very well for this) that is big enough to fit over the receptacle that is mounted on the side of the trailer where the shore power cord plugs into. Slip the loop over the receptacle and push it back all the way to the wall. Then plug in your shore power cord and lock it with the locking ring. Now grab the cord and and pull up some slack and tighten the slip knot. Now you power cord is being supported and there is no strain on it anymore. A lot cheaper than the 90 degree angle connectors and probably even less strain on the power cord....Here is a pic....

That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I was looking for a 90 degree cord the other day, to no avail I might add. I have the same Furrion connection (but 30amp) and I scratched my head as to why they didn't make it a 90 to begin with. I had to change out the four screws holding the entire connection to the side of the trailer. Keystone used four 1" screws that never got close to the 3/4" plywood backer on the back side of the wall. Off to Ace hardware I went and picked up 4 stainless 2" inch wood screws. Problem handled, but the power cord was still a problem, at least until your post. Thanks again!

There is a company that makes 30 Amp right angle twist lock on one end. https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Power-Cord/Epicord/277-000145.html
Mighty cord I think by Valtera is another https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Power-Cord/Mighty-Cord/A10-3025ED90.html?feed=npn&gclid=Cj0KCQjwz4z3BRCgARIsAES_OVfrxYZD0PuJbsYDqUdT LdM0KNu1ZYahG-JIrGi7t9YOK9F24MBmHLIaAlvkEALw_wcB

Thanks, I'll take a look. (I just tied up a length of paracord for time being)

Good idea, thanks. I as well added a 3/4 inch plywood backer and longer screws.

I just bought a 50 amp one of these. They are great.

The point I'm making is that the rope strain relief not only takes the strain off of the cord to plug, but also, the connection between the plug AND the receptacle. The 90 degree connector doesn't do that.

The only suggestion I would add to your trick is make a loop of cable that hangs below... that way if someone walks by and trips on the cable there is a loop of slack cable that reduce s the chance of them pulling the cable from the rig...

You’re absolutely right. And I’ve already taken your idea and applied it.
