It has been many years (40) since I drove Colorado Highway 149 between South Fork and Lake City. Last time, this was a fairly well maintained, and in some places very crooked, dirt/gravel road. But that was then.

Has anyone driven CO 149 in the recent years between Lake City and South Fork?

Thanks,
Ron

Drove from South Fork to Lake City in Aug of this year.
Paved road all the way.
Going up Slum (Slumgullion Pass) pavement cracks got rough and slowed down to about 25mph.
Going down from Slum to Lake City, used 1st gear. Many, many curves mostly 20-25 mph. Had to brake very little and not hard. No hot brakes in Lake City!
Not a lot of traffic.
No Problems!

Going up towards Slum, there is a water fall off to the right. Small sign with a turn lane.
Nice parking area with restrooms. Worth the stop.

Would do this again! Nice drive! No white knuckles, at all!

2010 F350 with 36' total length tt.
Gross weight of 18,800 lbs

My summer homebase is in South Fork, so I travel 149 frequently, in the truck or Harley. Its good, mostly smooth, 2 lane roadway with ocassional passing areas. the only area needing extra attention, is the down hill section from Slumgullion (11,530) down into Lake City. Its a pretty steep grade, but as long as you gear down & take it slow, no problems.
In the Fall, this section has some of the best colors. Here is a shot about half way down
