The Soo Locks

For us, a visit to the Michigan UP would have been incomplete without exploring the Soo Locks and taking a boat ride up into Lake Superior and back.

From Sault St Marie (US) our boat ride took us up into Lake Superior through a CDN lock and back to Sault St Marie via a USA lock.

The pictures below are just a miniature glimpse of our adventure.

Ships are built exclusively for transiting the Soo Locks. They are long and narrow because of the locks limited width. Iron ore is a major commodity transported through the Great Lakes.

We love Sault St.Marie the locks are awesome, so are the freighters that pass through! It’s very impressive to view them at night as they maneuver the St. Marys River. Across the International bridge on the Canadian side is the Bush Pilots Museum well worth a visit!
