Gray Water

No longer RVing has given me the opportunity to look back and reflect on all the things we learned.

On our very first trip full timing we were headed north with Nova Scotia being the destination.

Another of our planned stops was the huge Indian casino, Foxwoods in rural CT. We found a large campground resort in Bozrah, CT called Odetha Resort, both unique names. When we checked-in they told us all they had available was a elect/water/gray water site. Gray water dumping wasn’t something we had done or heard of before then. Come to find out we would need a special sewer connection with a garden hose attachment and we would have to hold all black water aboard until we used the dump station upon departure. Of course the camp office would sell us the connection pictured below. No problem, the two of us can go about 10 days without having to dump the black tank.

At least we had a nice shaded large site (151).

Im confused, did they only allow you to drain your black tank through the attachment hose and only the non solid out?

Don’t bother to dump your grey water. Save it for when you dump the black on exit. It will help wash the hose out. This is for those who fill up the grey faster than the black. Eg showering, laundry etc.

There are many campgrounds in northern tier states and Canada that don't have full hookups. For some, it's because of the expense to build a "freeze proof sewer system". A few of them have installed a "smaller diameter sewer system" that is less expensive and will handle gray water, but not black waste. So, the cap connects to the smaller diameter system connections.

Summergirl, when your black tank will hold 2 weeks of waste but your gray tanks will only hold 2 days of waste, it's nice to be able to stay on site and dump gray waste, then "on the last couple of days" close the gray valves, fill those tanks and tow to the dump station, dump the black and then use the gray to rinse the hose (as normally done at most sites/dump stations).

In campground sites limited to gray water dumping - such as the on I referenced - the sewer connection has a garden hose connection. The overall plumbing is the same size as a FHU site. Usually the sewer connection has a cap glued onto it with a garden hose connection. With just the two of us we can normally stay at a gray water site for about 10 days without having to dump the black tank. That's just a guess because we never stay that long.

For full timers like us, graywater dumping has a plus side, we can still use our washer/dryer every day, which was our habit.
