Yellowstone first part of June- suggestions?

We are looking at going to Yellowstone the first week of June next year.
We have a 40' fifth wheel so I know spots in the park are almost non-existent for us. Looking for suggestions for places to camp just outside of the park and possibly places in the park. (Hook-ups or no hook-ups doesn't matter) WE will be there for 4-5 days and want to see as much as possible. Also any advice in general for the park that time of year. We also may be going to Mount Rushmore so any suggestions for that area would be welcome too. Thanks

You're not likely to find a spot at any of the big campgrounds in Yellowstone where you can make a reservation. But you may be able to shoehorn your fiver into one of the Forest Service campgrounds inside the park, but there are no services so you'll be boondocking.

Otherwise, there are lots of campgrounds outside the park in or near Gardiner, West Yellowstone, Cody, etc. There is also a place between the South Entrance and Grand Teton (don't miss Grand Teton!) called Flagg Ranch. There's also a great Forest Service campground about 20 miles east of the East Entrance called Wapati that has electric.

We stayed at Yellowstone Valley Inn, about halfway between Cody and the East entrance, 30 miles each way. About a day to make either of the loops in Yellowstone but a decent place if you want to see Cody and the park from one spot. I see you have a Toyhauler so it’s a nice bike ride as well. Many of the in park and state campgrounds are tight for larger rv’s so check carefully.

We've not camped on the east side of YS park, so can't help much there. You mentioned Rushmore as a possibility and we did take an extended trip there. I'd recommend staying in the Custer State Park Stockade Lake North campground. We had a spot (and there were several others) that would easily have handled your TH. While Mt Rushmore is a very inspiring patriotic memorial, there is much more to see in the Park and surrounding area than just the memorial.

Yellowstone is a great place with many wonderfully unique sights that shouldn't be missed. That said, we've seen more wildlife in Custer SP and Teton NP than we have in YS. http://www.keystoneforums.com/forums/album.php?albumid=1142

As far as Rushmore, lots of places there. We stayed at KOA Rapid City.
If I had the choice of Black Hills area of Yellowstone well, I'd go over Beartooth pass again though.:)

In early June, there can be some freak snow storms in the Yellowstone area, just be prepared.

We go to Rainbow Point campground in West Yellowstone when we're down that way. Electric hookups, no water/sewer. There is a water fill up on the way into the campground. It's a state park campground. Way cheaper than the RV parks and just a few miles from West Yellowstone.

If you make it to West Yellowstone I recommend visiting the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. It's well worth the price of admission.

We go to Rainbow Point campground in West Yellowstone when we're down that way...

We also like Rainbow Point. Usually have no problem reserving online or showing up mid-week and getting an on-call spot.

Have plenty of DEET bug spray on hand. Hebgen mosquitoes don't flinch at anything else.

If you hear what sounds like someone frantically banging on pots & pans, they're trying to scare a bear away from their campsite

Also- keep an eye on the rubber bumper plugs on the rear of your trailer. I had a hitch-hiking squirrel chew it's way inside the bumper and dart out when I stopped in Bozeman on the way
home a couple years ago.

If you stay at the Grand Teton's you will find it close to Yellowstone and even more majestic. There are three RV spots that can be found at:

We went to Yellowstone two years ago in mid June. Stayed at a state park in Idaho called Henry Lake SP. was only about a 15-20 minute drive to West Yellow Stone (west entrance into the park). Beautiful camp ground right on the lake. Moose came down to the lake every evening and the views, sunsets and fishing were great. The lot sizes are very nice and plenty of room for the largest RVs. We will definitely be going back. We found that the campgrounds closer to Yellowstone were full of seasonal workers and they seem to be a bit territorial.

I haven't been there in a camper, so can't comment on that aspect. But, we have spent a good deal of time in and around the park, so I'll give you a few of our faves:

If you have bikes in that Fuzion then I have to mention that The Beartooth and Chief Joseph Hwy's are not to be missed... but may not be open for the season at that time.

In Cody is the Buffalo Bill museum. Amazing place.
In Yellowstone one of my faves that is a little less visited is the West Thumb Geyser Basin.

For wildlife, the Lamar Valley Rd (from Tower towards Cooke City), The Canyon -Tower section of the loop road, and the exit to West Yellowstone are the places we have seen the most. In the winter we've seen wolves, bighorn and massive herds of elk around Mammoth and towards Gardiner... but I don't think that area will be great in June.

We love the Old Faithful Inn, and often watch Old Faithful from it's second or third floor veranda with a coffee or hot chocolate.

For the finer things, Jackson is the place, and the drive along the Tetons is, as has been mentioned, spectacular.

Weather is likely to be chilly at night, and the high elevations will likely have snow on the ground.

Was there September of this year. Most of the attraction have small parking lots and if the park is busy that will be a issue. When we where there we left early in the morning to beat the crowds for a while. You can pack a lunch for that day or stop at a restaurant which is usually bar food. The speed limit is anywhere from 25 to 45 mph. Spend a day at Grand Tetons and visit Jackson.
