A buddy of mine just bought a trailer, has an older 2005 ram 1500
Truck GVWR 6,650 lbs
FRONT GAWR 3,700 lbs
REAR GAWR 3,900 lbs

Trailer GVWR 7,610 lbs

Weights
Truck
FRONT - 3,160
REAR - 2,520
Total: 5,680

With trailer (model svt248bhle)
Front 3,100
Rear 3,400
Trailer axle 5,100
Total: 11,640

Am I correct in assuming his payload is truck weight of 5,680 subtracted from gvwr of 6650 so payload of 970 lbs?

I was surprised that he only lost 60 lbs on the front axle with the trailer connected, is that considered significant or not?

He needs sway control and I assume some weight distribution. Looks like after he is hooked up he only has 110lbs of available payload left.

Clearly not the ideal truck, no need to regurgitate the multiple threads addressing that.

I have a propride hitch which is way to heavy for him and little knowledge of other options. I was looking at the Andersen hitch for him which looked ok, and is 60 lbs. So yes razor thin margin on the payload.

Any opinions on the Andersen, or other options to consider?2362623627

What? No regurgitation?? Now that really puts a damper on things. I do hope he had the truck and trailer totally loaded for whatever they are going to be doing.

I'm not a fan of the Andersen because of the wearable poly components in it. I do believe we have some folks that use it and they seem to be happy if I recall. I'm sure some of them will chime in. In this scenario it's about the only thing your buddy can use without the hitch alone pushing him over gvwr.

Can someone move this into the towing forum, maybe I just posted in the wrong place.

I would go by what the stickers on his door pillar say. Once you introduce the WDH it will level out all the numbers on the axles including the weight of the hitch. I like my blue ox, people that have them like them. Once you set it up it's the same each time. I moved it from my 1500 to my 2500 seamlessly.
