Towing without WD hitch

Just returned from a wonderful trip to VA beach. The day before we left, I saw something I have not seen before. A couple pulls into the site next to us, A Toyota Sequoia pulling a roughly 34 foot travel trailer (2 large slides) and NO weight distribution hitch. Just a square tube shank with a ball, and no brackets on the trailer either.

Said to my wife, I hope to never be on the road with him. When it goes south someone is going to get seriously hurt.:hide:

The battle then becomes, does one shake their head and walk away? Or, stop, attempt to ask questions politely, and provide some safe towing insight?

On the question of wether or not to say something to someone, we were recently at a campground next to a nice gentleman with a small trailer. I heard him cranking on the stabilizer jacks with an impact gun but I didn’t think much of it except for the loud noise. When I looked over, I saw the tongue jack was about two feet off of the ground. The entire trailer was being supported by the flimsy stabilizer jacks. I decided I had to go over and say something. I was trying to be real diplomatic and he was receptive to the feedback. He was brand new to trailer camping and he had no idea the problems he could have had!

I try to stay out of peoples business, but if there is some significant risk of injury or major property damage, I think saying something is the right thing to do.

I was coming back from Lake Whitney today (non towing) driving a tad over the 75mph speed limit between Post TX and Lubbock TX. I keep my eyes out (front and back) for RVs when traveling. Back behind me I could see an RV being towed with a pickup with headlights on. Inside the stripes, over the stripes, wiggle, waggle...and gaining on me like crazy!

I watched in shock as he closed and went past me...inside the stripes, over the stripes, wiggle, waggle and pulling away. I told DW "I can't believe this". I kicked it up to pace him; 86 mph. I pulled up beside him; Ford F150, no WD/sway, sagging rear end, 2 kayaks and looked like bicycles in the back, and...the heel of one hand on the wheel as he drove nonchalantly along; at 86mph, inside the stripes...you get it. I just looked at DW, shook my head and let him go. What can you do with that level of ignorance?

So, if you're a member and own a new/late model dark blue F150 with kayaks in the back towing a Keystone Bullet with a dealer tag and Camping World spare tire cover from the Lubbock area....you need to SLOW DOWN and get a decent hitch.

I knew of a guy years ago that pulled a 35' TT with a 1995 Yukon WITHOUT a WD hitch, or a brake controller! At that time we had a 97 Expedition with the 5.4 and he made fun of me for towing a Jayco 29FBS with it... which we had a prodigy brake controller and a Equalizer hitch.



He said that it pulled his trailer just fine, but can you imagine getting into a bad situation, or a mountain coming down it. Just cause it can, doesnt mean it should!

I wouldn't have did it if it wasn't. I wanted to see if he had a wdh which I hadn't seen as he passed nor as I paced him - just for my own edification. We were in no danger; I've towed trailers that started the tail wagging the dog and I've watched lots of others. I was not in a position for that to affect us.
