When you are entering the data into an RV GPS do you add a safety margin into the height field and if so how many inches. Our RV measures 11’ 11” and I am contemplating boosting that measurement for safety...thoughts ?

I'd be leery of anything under 14'.
"In the United States, the minimum height of a bridge going over a road is 14 to 16 feet, or 4.3 to 4.9 meters. In general, the minimum height slightly varies depending on the type of roadway."

I would plug in 12' 6" if it were mine. I have the truck version of the Garmin in my commercial trucks and I find the bridge database weak here in New England. Have had to turn around in tight busy places a few times!

My rig is supposed to be 13’6”. I enter 13’10” so I can go under 14’ bridges. I know I am under 14 because the 14’ over height detectors didn’t flash when I went by and I safely made it under that bridge. I know that’s not the best way to test it but it’s what I had available at the time I was headed down I95.

Keep in mind that the length of your unit can effect it's height if the overhead obstruction is in a low spot with inclines on both sides. As your TV climbs one side the trailer is still at a high point on the other side making the center measurement higher than on level ground. Don't ask me how I know this. :hide:

There are quite a large number of bridges or underpasses that are much lower than 13'6", and there are a large number of youtube videos that show the damage done when RV's or trucks attempt to drive through these locations. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?hsimp=yhs-att_001&hspart=att&p=youtube+low+clearance+RV+damage#id=2&vid=b4353b4fc93eb51bae684361c8d677fd&action=click
