View Full Version : Ottawa Ontario to Prince Edward Island
Hi all, anyone done this trip? Looking to stay on the Canadian roads for this trip. We are thinking of doing two days to get there leave on a Friday drive to Edmonton hopefully overnight at the Wallmart then carry on to the Island. Same for the way back. This sound doable or should I leave early and just drive the whole route. We are both ex military so we are use to doing long hauls. Would've to hear from anyone that has some info?

We did this trip last summer except from Hamilton so a bit further starting point. First night we made it to the Quebec city KOA and second night we stayed at Mactaquac PP in New Brunswick (seemed like a great park). Arrived the third day. We avoided doing the Walmart stops. I found I would add at least 2 or 3 hours to whatever the time Google maps would tell us.
We then went on to Cape Breton after a week and ultimately came home through the US. Whole trip was over 5 thousand kms.
jecklund1, Thanks for the reply. What were the roads and traffic like? What is your rig that you were using. I'm planing about $900 for fuel. We are looking at staying at Twin Shores.

We were pulling a hybrid so quite a bit smaller that your setup. Also a reason why we didn't want to stay in parking lots. Roads and traffic were not too bad. A lot of construction through Quebec. Make sure to take hwy 30 to bypass Montreal and it's traffic. I think it was a toll hwy but worth it. Some decent climbs through New Brunswick too.

Tom, I don't see you making this on a dead run without a stop. 850 miles towing a large RV (not to mention through Quebec) is a pretty hefty haul if you are going to actually enjoy your trip. All the veteran haulers here have done what you mentioned and I'll bet none would tell you it was a fun trip. I recommend the route Google maps gives you and take two days. We made your trip but on a motorcycle and it was enjoyable. Trying to find an easy route back if you come through the US is a horse of another color.

Just figure you'll average 50 mph for the trip & you'll be fairly close on travel time. Traveling in a convoy, even with just 2 rvs, also slows you down. Also regardless of the brand of truck, figure 8 mpg towing if you're trying to get a ballpark fuel cost.
Traveling in pairs, 850 miles will be 2 very long driving days. Typically for us a 300 mile day was a very LONG day while towing, just driving we could easily do 500+/-.

We live in the Eastern Township of QC, (Sherbrooke). Ottawa to Edmonston NB is doable in one day but long. As long as you do not hit Montreal or Quebec City at rush hour you will be OK. Roads are as usual in Quebec rough in sections.

Last fall we started out from Markham Ontario, stopped at the Walmart in Quebec city 12 hours later. Normally a 7hr trip, 401 closed both ways in Napanee. No problem sleeping that night. Stopped at a CG just outside of Fredricton, then on to Shediac / Kouchobouguac NP. The drive from QC over the NW portion of NB is very hilly, we decided to break it up into 3 days to get to the coast. I am used to driving long distances in a car, trailering is different, as are people. Have some plan B stops, Walmarts, HD's and Crappy Tire stores are good for staying at. We did 8000km in 16 days, we loved it but we were tired when we got home. It was our first big trip. You can never account for weather and road closures. Remember, your towing your bedroom. Good Luck, Cavendish NP is awesome.

TJO: Noticed you were planning on staying at Twin Shores. Having been raised on PEI I am hoping you have already made your bookings as a lot of return visitors pre-book their sites as they leave the previous year. It is not just Twin Shores this is pretty much the case for all campgrounds in PEI in particular during OLD Home Week in Aug (10 days).
Enjoy the Island, camp on the North Shore but swim on the South. The water is definitely warmer,lol.

It's a nice spot. I was there for the first time last year, and are going back again Aug 17-21 this year.

Camping Transit is a very nice campground if it works into your travel plans. It is located just across the river from Quebec City in the town of Lévis. You can take the ferry into the heart of Quebec City so you don’t have to drive or worry about where to park. On Thursday nights they have a spectacular fireworks show with very comfortable viewing from the ferry landing in Lévis.

Actually no - neither my wife nor I like lobster. :)

Well today is our packing day for our PEI Trip (wife has been packing all week). So i'm torquing the wheels, air pressure check, adding a bit of water to the fresh water tank. We are leaving at 0030hrs Friday for the first leg of the trip. I like driving when everyone else is sleeping. So looking forward to this trip. Hope the weather plays along. mmmmmmm lobster and mussels... can't wait.

Sounds like a great trip. Enjoy. Nice you can drive at night. Here in the mountains we don't even think of going on the highways until full daylight unless we have one of those Aussie grill guards ( lots of animals roam the roads at night).
