I know the RV parts places sell heated water hoses so you don't have to worry about freeze. They are proud of them as well. You can go a box store and buy an 18' heating tape for $30. A few wraps of duct tape to keep in in place and seems like it would be a less pricey alternative. What is wrong with this idea?

Having done both I would just say that the heated hose we carry with us every winter is far better than trying to take care of a regular hose wrapped with a heater tape. By the time you figure in the costs of both (and the heated hose will usually be much higher quality than the "wrapped hose") along with trying to deal with the "wrapping" on the regular hose day in day out", I would go with the heated hose every time.

If I had to do it again.... I would purchase the "pre-made" heated hose.

Did the do it yourself work? Yes! I even went to the trouble of using the Pipe Insulation around the hose & tape. Oh and maybe that is why the hose blistered and had to re-purchase new hoses! (white rv water hose)! So, after taping the heat tape to the hose every 12 inches or so, then taping the pipe insulation in place.....

If you only have to do 15 to 20 feet... probably not that big of a job. Mine was considerably longer.

We've had a Pirit heated hose since 2013 and it has never failed us. I purchased a Camco brand hose a couple years ago for the FIL for his trailer, and when we opened the Camco box, the Hose was labelled Pirit, and he has not had any issues with his either.
