Would like help in planning a route from Springfield VT to Orlando FL in the first weeks of Nov. Will cross the Hudson River near Albany. Want to stay away from the metropolitan areas of CT, NYC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington and I95 but picking up I95 at Richmond. Hear that there is much road construction on 81 and 80.
HELP!:bow::bow:

Welcome to the forum.

We regularly travel between NE FL and SE ME and avoid I-95 as much as possible. The I-84/I-81/I-77/I-26/I-95 route is the one we typically take (ours will be a bit different on the northern end from what is shown). Plenty of campgrounds once you get out of NY.

Hope this helps. Safe travels.

Yes, with some modifications, that is the route I normally take. A fellow snowbirder said that there was much construction on I81 and the holdups were incredible. As I get closer to VA, might try crossing to Richmond and then pick up I95 south rather than going to I26. Any thoughts on this?:cool:

One year we visited friends on the Cape and in Hampton on the way home; this meant we traveled I-95. Somewhere south of Richmond (and I don't recall exactly where now, perhaps I-85) we cut back over to the western route - we were tired of the abysmal traffic on I-95. This was in the days before cellular traffic (and we weren't pulling the trailer); things may have been better on I-95 further south of Richmond but we had our fill and opted to go inland.

We recently came back from ME the prior route described and didn't have any difficulties with construction, in fact, we hardly remember anything going on. PA is usually the worst, but we breezed through there. We did pick up family southeast of Charlotte during rush hour, so we took some back roads to avoid going through the city and meandered over to I-95 further north of where we usually connect. Fortunately no traffic issues.

I know after hurricanes and storms, getting the roads open is the top priority so I know all the interstates are up and running. It was just the normal construction issues on I81 that arose because of a snowbirder who drove south last week indicated to me how horrible the traffic holdups were on this inland route. BUT in thinking about it, maybe a slowdown (to smell the coffee!) in this 1400+ mile trip is what is needed. I am not in a time crunch to be in FL so adding a few hours is something I/we should not get stressed over. I have looked at SUMMIT POND'S google maps suggestion and will pretty much be following it except for the NY state thruway section.

Thanks All, see you on the north to south trek as we snowbirders hit the road.:flowers::USA::wave::thewave:

Just drove from Philadelphia to Saint Augustine on I95. Very few construction zones, and no huge traffic jams. Traveled Sat and Sun to avoid rush hour. Pleasant drive.

Now you have given me another option but could do I95 on a weekend. How are the tolls from Philadelphia on I95?:confused:

Toll not too bad, under $10. Toll part out of Philadelphia is short.

Take 87,84, 81 thru Harrisburg Gettysburg 81-15-270 puts you on 95 south of Arlington/DC. Clear sailing on 95 from there. Avoids philly NJ NY DC Baltimore, tunnel, tolls and basically anything else you’d want to avoid.

I just made that trip from Henniker NH to Columbia SC the middle of October. I got on I-91 at Brattleboro VT. took it to I-84 in Hartford CT, then to I-81 in Scranton PA to I-77 almost to my back door, to go to Orlando you could continue on 77 to I-26 then to 95.

There were a couple of spots of construction in I-84 and in Charlotte NC on I-77 but the rest was an easy drive and we stayed at some nice CG's on the way. No tolls

As I remember there are tunnels on I-77 through VA right? I've only ever done this route in a car. What's the rules when towing a TT?

They are fairly short tunnels and I don't believe there is any requirement to shut off the propane. Plenty of height and width for the TT.

There are not any tunnels on I-77 from I-81 to I-26. I think they are north of I-81.
