Just to be safe towing my Raptor toyhauler I have the NC 25,000lb tags on my dually. They said it was the truck and camper combined.

Sucks having to pay over $600 a year for tax and tags on a 09 truck.

Does any other state have higher tag costs than NC or are they about average?

Here's the chart the DMV uses, left is private and right is farm use prices.

Oregon was $89.00 every two years on the TV. Just got bumped up to I believe $112.00 every two years

I can not remember the RV one but its every 2 years as well and I think its under 40 for that

WOW! Indiana issues weight ratings for the individual vehicle plate ie: my F350 has an 11,000 lb plate(the GVW of the truck) and my gooseneck flatbed has 9000 lb plates (the GVW of the trailer). An RV in Indiana has an "RV plate" which has no weight rating but is charged Excise Tax according to it's year of manufacture. The plate weights are not additive. I have to ask if you are required to have a CDL to drive a pickup pulling a toyhauler with a "Combined Gross Weight Rating" of 26,000lbs or over??? It seems strange that you would need a CDL to drive an empty GMC 3500 Dually plated at 26,000lbs when not pulling a trailer. :ermm:

My 2017 Ram 3500, dually, has a 14000 GVWR... here in Grand California any pickup over 10000 GVWR needs to pay an extra declared weight fee. You can choose to not pay the added fee, but if you get caught towing or exceeding the 10000 weight, you can get smacked with additional fees and fines. Needless to say, i choose to pay the added weight fee. So this year my registration was ~$1250 :(

And my ‘94 F350 DRW was about $350 with weight fees.

Did you have to claim weight? Trucks under 8001 unladen and 11499 gross are exempt.

When I bought it I had to declare that it was only for “personal” use and 10,000 GVWR.

Mine is personal use too, but in the event I end up towing something heavy or carry a load in the bed to put me over 10K (my payload is like 5000) id rather be safe than sorry and not deal with the aftermath.

Newer trucks have a higher GVWR, I don’t remember the year it changed. Mine is 10,000 lbs per the sticker on the door.

I’ve thought about a newer truck, but that would start the vicious cycle of buying a bigger trailer. I’m trying to really “retire” so I have to limit myself.

unless your being paid to drive it, it is NOT commercial. I can pull 80,000 with my other truck w/o a CDL just as long as no $ ends up in my pocket. I haul our ww2 tanks to parades and shows and stuff like that.

I don't know what state you're from... in California, ALL pickups, whether it's a Toyota or a 1 ton dually, is a commercial vehicle (even a taxicab is a commercial vehicle, but that's a different topic). Being a commercial vehicle in California does not necessarily mean the vehicle is used in commerce. There's more to it, but that's the nuts and bolts of commercial registration.

The factory towing package on our older Dodge dually included 4.10 gearing. That lifted its GCWR to 23,500#. Here in SC that weight rating is displayed on the vehicle registration and we get a different color/design tag. We have a very active state DOT patrol that often stop and inspect rigs, including RV trailers that are suspected of being over weight. If over weight you’re not going to move it again until the rig is lowered to an acceptable weight or another (better equipped) TV is brought in to move the trailer. The first fine is a minimum of $500.00. And, yes, the registration fees are much higher as the GCWR increases.

Don't know if this helps, but here in Connecticut, we register the truck for the GVW. "Non commercial" (i.e. campers, landscapers etc...) not used in commerce , are a flat rate regardless of weight. As long as you don't exceed truck weight.. you're good to go!

Good Luck,

In North Carolina you only have to tag the truck for enough to cover the weight of the truck and the weight carried in the bed not the hold trailer. The DMV told you wrong.

Go to NC division of motor vehicles, vehicle registration section title manual. section2 chapter1-page3. Camping Trailer and Fifth wheels. Camping trailers are not to be included in the weight declared for license on a truck, if used only for recreational purposes. License weight on the truck should include the tongue part that is in the truck only, not full weight of camper.

Texas, about $70 on either 17 Honda Pilot and 12 Ram DRW. 5th is about $130, based on its gvwr. Texas also has non-cdl if combined or single is over 26k. I have the non-cdl class A.

Me too, garage envy is a real thing.

I just got the plates/tags for my "new to me" Dodge Ram 3500 with
the special "Honorably Discharged" plates on it (carried over from my
last truck) it cost me $336.

On my old (2015) motorhome at 3 yrs old tags ran $1100.

Bolo4u, your $1250 tags for your truck is just one more reason I moved
away from California 4 years ago. Did not like $5 a gallon diesel prices
either.

We have not taken delivery of the 5th wheel yet and since it is a 6 month
old repo that we are buying for about 1/3 of new cost I'm hoping for a
bit lower cost on the tags.

Relocating is something we are exploring, in the next few years. So far diesel prices have stayed manageable in my part of California (Northern). There is an indian casino about 1 mile from my place, and they just installed a large gas station and RV park. Their fuel prices across the board are much cheaper, per gallon, cheaper than driving the extra couple miles into town. Plus, they have DEF at the pump!

Close, but not totally correct.

You do not have to declare ANY of the weight from an RV Camping Trailer in your weighted tag weight rating. You do have to include any other weight you carry in the bed of the truck.

Now, if you also have a utility trailer that you haul stuff around on you need to consider that weight when you select your weighted tag rating.

When I transferred the tags from SC to NC I was ready to pay the big bucks but the DOT office in Franklin explained it well.

My weighted tag only covers what I think I will be carrying in the truck and on my utility trailer.

Just FYI for folks in other states comparing tag prices, in North Carolina the registration fee includes city and/or county property tax on the vehicle, so comparisons with other states may be misleading. Also the fee would vary from county to county, depending on local tax rates.

So I would need tags to cover my truck and the enclosed motorcycle trailer and what ever is in the trailer, but just the truck not the camper.

So the be clear the tongue weight of the fifth wheel isn't counted? Reading and understanding regulations isn't my strong suit so that's why I asked the DMV in person and both reps at the counter said I had to include the weight of my camper.

In Texas, 2012 Ram 3500 dually registration fee was $78.75 and 37' Montana 5th wheel RV was $137.75. Now in AZ. Dually registration fee was $344.04. Afraid to register RV in AZ May move back to TX.

Glad Michigan does not do it that way. We pay a flat fee for our plates on the TT and do not have to pay again unless we are plating a new one. I think it is the same for any trailer, Utility etc. One time fee. Now the plates on my Ram are another thing. The plates on my Ram are 217.00 per year and if I remember correctly they are going up this year.
