Decimal points checked, yup !

Many causes, refinery shutdowns in WA state, lack of pipeline from Alberta and BC government's high carbon tax and public transportation tax on top of that.

Got to love the left coast.

Hodgy -
Gas in Vancouver BC is $1.619 per litre NOT $161.9. I think you have the decimal (cent) point in the wrong place. Regardless, the price is both outrageous and crazy and is, as you correctly stated, the highest in North America. The bad news is that the price is going to go up even further in the coming month or two.

Diesel is about 10 cents a litre cheaper.

Yeah, pretty much the same here in Oz. Our gas is $4.54 (US) per (US) gal.

Nope.

3.78541178 x $1.61 = $6.09 CAD per US gallon.

Thats two cents less than my original post, I was wrong.

Maybe John can come back in and post why he thinks fuel prices in the U.S. should be "much higher"? Hope we're not moving into a "green" (we should use horses not fossil fuels) vs common sense. I'm sure there's another explanation since anyone towing RVs isn't really worried about the use of fossil fuels....right?

Cut across the bottom corner of California at Needles back in early Feb & gas was $4.39 per gallon, diesel was $4.67, crossed back into Nevada & it dropped $2+ per gallon, to me that's price gouging.
The entire west coast is very expensive for everything!!

I certainly hope the US is not going down that road. "They" will have us living in caves and eating rodents for protein.

Sorry, straying into the political realm.

I always found it interesting to calculate the fuel cost when figuring fuel cost in Ireland.

Funny story: this weekend a local AM/PM was changing the price of unleaded, goofed with the decimal point and instead of 3.19/ga it was 31.9 CENTS...lasted a little over two hours.

Yeah it’s pricey but not quite that bad. It’s about 1.35 a liter here too right now diesel is a little less

Our fuel here on the Right Coast, Upstate NY tax hell is edging up to between $2.67 - $2.83 a gallon in the Capital District for unleaded with diesel $2.99 - $3.19. Amazing that since the US has in the past couple years become a net exporter of crude that the price of refined products are going up. The blame has been put on the OPEC Cartel, but that's nonsense here in North America

It is outrageous that a simple decimal point could make that much difference. Way too much power for such a small dot.

It is only going to get worse for BC'ers in the near future. Not to get political but the govt. trying to block the trans mountain pipeline is going to wreak havoc on their prices. Gotta love those tree huggers

1.21 per litre in Manitoba today.

Apologizes in advance for this long "Rant" but here goes...

So here's a little different angle. 72% of the cost of a gallon of fuel is related to the cost of crude oil. The remaining 28% is refining, transportation, retail profits and TAXES. Since the 28% costs are fairly static then the cost of crude is the biggest contributor to the fluctuation in prices at the pump. But who is the biggest player in determining the cost of crude. It's not who you might think. Look at the top 10 producing countries:
Rank Country Oil - production (bbl/day)
1 Russia 10,550,000
2 Saudi Arabia 10,460,000
3 United States 8,853,000
4 Iraq 4,452,000
5 Iran 4,068,000
6 China 3,981,000
7 Canada 3,679,000
8 UAE 3,106,000
9 Kuwait 2,924,000
10 Brazil 2,515,000

No real common denominator here. These producers control the supply but who is controlling demand?? An important question since price is all about supply and demand.
The answer is two major commodity futures exchanges: NYMEX and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). These exchanges feature futures who's pricing is based on west Texas Intermediate (WTI) light sweet crude and Brent Crude, respectively. Here, traders all across the globe can participate in gaining direct exposure to oil instead of going through oil-based companies in the stock market. Speculators "playing" this market will buy oil today at a given price then sell it tomorrow at a higher price. And , since they are buying up a lot of oil they are creating a false demand. Here's an interesting bit of information from Reuters: LONDON, April 14 (Reuters) - A record 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil traded on April 13 on the world’s two main futures exchanges, the equivalent of almost 30 times the amount of oil used around the world each day, data showed on Wednesday.
In other words, the same barrel of oil was sold 30 times in one day!!
No change in the "real" demand for oil. No change in the "real" cost to produce the oil. Just 30 different transactions for the same oil with the price rising on each sale.
Now you know another reason we pay way too much at the pump:confused:

Well they didn't want a pipeline. Our friends to East will be in same boat if Saudi Arabia cuts off their oil. I think you meant $1.61 per Cad liter and $6.11 per US Gal. LOL But it could get that bad soon. LOL:hide:

EDIT !! - I have a bad habit of commenting on the first message before reading them all. Sorry this was addressed already. LOL

If you are interested in checking gas prices either in Texas or Not Texas (US or Canada) go to gasbuddy.com. Put in the zip or town and bingo... current cheapest prices. My zip code doesn't have any gas stations!

Ya it's absolutly rediculous. There's a different excuse every time. Luckily I live 2 minutes from Point Roberts WA so I fill up there. It's still more than Blaine and Bellingham but it works out to about 30 cents canadian cheaper than here.
