Here's two photos from our front porch yesterday afternoon about 3PM and today about 9AM. From all indications, we're not yet "half way through" with this storm, so the predicted 5-8" has already fallen plus another 5-8 left to fall this afternoon, then a "lull" and still that much or more left to fall tomorrow....
SPRING ???? What's that ????

Gee Whiz, seems so late to see that much snow. I feel for you. Wish I had taken some pictures of all the beautiful azaleas in FL before we left. They were everywhere and so pretty. You could have just pulled them up and "dreamed" of spring.:(

Uh, that's not lake effect. It's part of a large storm system going through here on its way to John. We are supposed to end up with 12 to 18 inches here by tomorrow night.

Tom,
We "really aren't in the lake effect belts"... Those are around Petoskey and Kalkaska. We're a little further away from the Lake Michigan coast and most of it falls before the moisture gets this far inland.... This storm (mostly system snow), however..... well, it's not the "typical cold front" that we see in mid April, that's for sure !!! It's still falling, even though it was supposed to clear up by noon.... Winds are picking up, so yeah, I'm glad I'm not towing the Cougar across the bridge today !!!!!

The 6 oclock weather says the official snowfall in the past 12 hours is 17". that's on top of the 15" last weekend (which had almost melted). It's at least that deep almost everywhere and some drifts 4' and 5' around the lee side of buildings. DW and I just spent 2 hours with shovels and a 10HP snowblower, just moving the part closest to the buildings where I can't get the tractor. Prediction is for almost as much tonight and tomorrow, so.... We've already broken the record for April snowfall totals and with what's predicted, it'll be a record not to be broken for a long, LONG time.... Ain't spring fun ????
Hey TAZ.... you can stop sending it this way any time now LOL
ADDED: Whether it's "system snow", "Lake effect snow" or "Ma Nature's angry snow" It's just as heavy to shovel and definitely not fun any more..... IT"S TIME FOR SPRING AND FOR THINGS TO WARM UP !!!!!!
ADDED #2: Just listened to the Cadillac weather, they are predicting freezing rain, sleet and only 2" of snow tonight/tomorrow. I like that forecast better (as long as we don't lose power)....

John,
Just reading the latest on the storms hitting you guys. Don't sound pretty, nor fun. Stoke the fire, grab a blanket, make some hot chocolate or? and settle in for a nice, cold winter evening. We wish you well and take care. Spring is here in many places. SOMEDAY it may come to you:(. Until then we'll be thinking of you as you wipe down the Slingshot and Cougar (after shoveling a trail to them); envisioning green trees, a winding road, a beautiful campground.......uhh, sorry! Didn't mean to take you down that road!! Hope fair weather comes to you soon!!

Just sitting here thinking, we could be in Louisiana, in the middle of rain storms, tornadoes, floods and snakes crawling into the house, or we could be here, safe, inconvenienced and frustrated..... Hmmmm Danny, you paint a pretty picture, one that would be great. It would be so nice to be someplace warm, riding the slingshot, sitting under the awning with a cool adult beverage, chicken on the grill, the smell wafting over the entire campground. Hmmmmm that does sound wonderful....
Alas, we're "sitting in a snowbank, laughing to keep from crying"... well, figuratively, anyway..... http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/winter/making-snow-angel-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)
I got the road cleared, it only took 8 swipes to move probably 40 tons of snow, but thankfully with the blower on the tractor it didn't take too long. It cleared up around 4 or 5 this afternoon and the next wave is supposed to start around 2AM. Depending on the station, one says mostly ice, one says mostly snow. 8 or 10" of snow is an inch of ice. One is easy to push or blow, the other just is inconvenient as long as we don't have to drive on it..... Tomorrow we'll know which we get (more laughing to keep from crying).... http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/christmas/winter-cold-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)
As my dad used to say, "this too shall pass, and next year this time, none of it will seem so terrible as it does right now"..... I hope he's right, again.....
I invite anyone who believes in global warming to come visit. We've got a couple extra snow shovels they can grab by the tiny end..... http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/winter/making-a-snow-man-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)
Now the decision boils down to hot chocolate http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/drink/hot-coffee.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)
or BEER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/drink/beer.gif (http://www.sherv.net/) I'm thinking the headache tomorrow morning might just be worth it this time......

I apologize. I'm thinking all this snow and ice is my fault, so my wife is telling me. I changed the oil on the snow blower last weekend and got it all tucked in for the summer as well as storing my shovels in the attic above the garage. On the upsdide (if there is one) the lawn tractor and mower are all set to go. Here in Ontario we do not have as much as you do John, but we have about 2 inches of frozen ice pellets on the ground.

TAZ,
Thanks for trying, that's about all anybody can ask....
As for places to put the accumulation, all of those 5' drifts we moved yesterday must not have liked where we put them. This morning, with the wind, they are "migrating" back to where they were. The back deck that I cleared of snow is, again, 4' deep and rising......
Green Bay with 18-30" ???? HOLY SNOWMOBILE, BATMAN !!!!!
zuley,
Sometimes I think the ice is worse than snow. Certainly harder to shovel and we won't even talk about trying to drive on it !!!! Stay safe !!!

I've been "arguing" with Mother Nature all day today (and she's winning)... Late yesterday I moved a 5' drift away from the house and cleared the driveway. This morning it was right back where it was. I moved it again this morning and "that old biddy" has already moved it back again. I'm going to wait until tomorrow morning to move it "hopefully one last time"..... The wind is supposed to change direction tonight, so that should help with the drifting. All told, I've moved about 100' of 5' drifts (two times), cleared 2+ feet from the drive and plowed the road (about 800') that was drifted well over 5' deep. And, from the looks of it all, I might as well have just stayed inside and watched the trees bend in the wind.....
80 degrees, eh? Must be nice, but we all know that when it's 80 up here, you'll be over 90 (maybe over 100) with 100% humidity. Every location has its good and bad, but dang it, it's time for a change !!!!!

Most everyone we meet comes from "up north" during the winter. Many, if not most, are from Michigan?? They even have their own little clique in the park. Many from Canada, some from ME and other northern states. None want to go back in winter and we communicate with many that work their return dates around the weather....like now, with some holding in AZ, TN etc. The thing is, despite what looks like terrible weather to me, they ALL can't wait to get back "home". They love their places. All the folks from MI talk about where they're from; and, those from the UP make sure they tell you, those that aren't try to tell you how close they are to it. Don't know the significance of that but they sure do.
I have no concept of MI and the UP or anywhere else there. But, many of our friends live in the UP and insist that we should come see them; and, I think we will. Sounds like visiting, maybe July-August, might keep us out of bad weather.
Long story to say, John, it may seem that the snow/ bad weather is endless (as I feel about the wind and sand), but at the end of the day the good outweighs the bad, generally (in our case I've told DW the houses are being sold and I'm moving "somewhere", "anywhere" that doesn't have the constant wind/dirt and never ending taxes....... Now to see if there is such a place.....

Every place I've ever been has taxes and most (there are some exceptions) states have pretty much equal taxes. Some "collect it" in the form of income tax, some collect it in the form of property tax, some collect it "a little of each and add in fees like "high vehicle registrations" additional taxes or fees, etc.
All told, most places I've lived, the "government costs" are pretty much the same, just taken out of different pockets.... It all comes from the same "poor soul that has to pay" so whatever they choose to call it, it's about the same cost....
That said, we're in Michigan because my DW was born and raised here. Her family all lives within a mile of our place, so we're together most of the year and, if something should happen to me, she has her support system already established (you know, someone to help her with the snow shoveling, starting the tractor and storing their stuff in her pole barn LOL
Anyway, there is something special about every state, just ask the people who live in it and they'll all tell you why "theirs is best".... Well, with a few exceptions, that is.....
As for Michigan, it's almost always "nice enough to camp in the summer", great winter sports, fishing is "out of this world" and there are still places where you don't hear a siren for months on end.
Life is good, no matter where one chooses to live if you can make the best of what that place has to offer..... Yeah, I know, I can't believe I just said that after looking out the window at that drift......

You are right. I never believed I would be in W TX now 12 years ago when I retired (all those dreams). MIL lived here, 45 miles away and we were the only family she had since she had moved from PA and FIL had passed. We stayed for her, and it was a HUGE blessing for all of us that we did, and she passed away in August of 16. If we hadn't stayed it would have been inconceivable. I promise, as you know, there is a plan for all of us. The charge we have as individuals is to look at the high side; think positive and always move toward what's best for us and the family. I've been blessed, in many ways, and, I DON"T HAVE TO SHOVEL SNOW. I am wishing you and everyone else caught in this stuff quick relief and a return to warm, nourishing sunshine! It's official. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/jobs/life-guard-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/) The NWS has just issued a new weather warning for all of Michigan !!! Spring is headed our way !!! We still have about 12-18 inches of snow on the ground, but we lost almost 6" yesterday and should lose even more today. The problem is the 6-8 foot piles (WalMart's parking lot has 20'+ piles) that will probably take until mid-late May to melt.
Low temps are still in the 20's, so it's too early to de-winterize, but hey, it's a move in the right direction.

JRTJH
04-20-2018, 05:45 AM
I don't know about chains, but there are some people who have installed studded snow tires to ride in the winter. Me, I'll wait until the roads are dry and it's above 60 (maybe 50 for the first few weeks). We're still riding snowmobiles as well, so all is not lost. I just want to change from a blue/white sled to a red/black "go-cart"......
Our road (we live on a private gravel road) is about 12" deep in slush/ice/snow/mud. I pushed much of the slush off the road yesterday, but with the melting, it was quickly replaced with melting runoff. Last night most of that froze and this morning, once again, 12" of slush/ice/snow/mud.... I'll make my daily "road grader pass" after lunch.
Once we get past the first 800', it's blacktop and pretty much dry. It's just getting from the garage to the road that's the obstacle course.

The blacktop roads are dry, it's just getting from the garage to the blacktop. But, I've had enough looking at that thing in the pole barn, tomorrow it's going somewhere.... Helmets are ready, snowmobile suits if needed, but probably just long johns and a windproof coat. We went to modular (full face) helmets several years ago. The easy on/off of an open face helmet with the protection of a full face helmet. Since we both wear glasses, it's much easier with a modular. If you've ever been hit in the head with a June bug at 70 MPH, you know that it's hard to maintain consciousness after the strike. There's no June bugs around in April, but my luck, a "errant bee" or a "slush bath" from a vehicle in the next lane..... For us, it's "always helmets"....

That’s good. Helmet law here on the left coast for years. I gave up riding back in the early 80’s when I got tired of being a target. Rode a Kawasaki KZ1000 MKII, with custom paint. Everybody thought I wanted to race and would “goad” me into pulling the throttle to avoid a collision.

Yup, seems there's always someone who wants to show you that their mom's Camaro is faster than your MC... They don't seem to care how close they get or how you try to avoid them.... I started riding in Junior High on a MoPed (easy to pedal when your allowance runs out and you can't afford a half gallon of gas) and managed to survive riding a Bultaco 471 in Turkey, Germany (autobahn is awesome on a BMW 1200 LT) and most of the UK. About the only bike I've ever ridden that didn't elicit someone wanting to race was a Honda "Pu-ying" (a 50 CC scooter).

Sounds awesome John! Enjoy the ride on the slingshot; I'm glad you finally get to get it out on the road. Let us know how it goes (weather, other road conditions, bugs, etc).

Will do Matt. It's supposed to be 55, sunny and clear tomorrow. We're both looking forward to heading out for lunch "somewhere away from here" and then a relaxing ride back home "the long way around".... It's been a long time waiting for weather to clear up, so we're probably as excited as two kids on Christmas Eve.....

Not to pile it on...Ok maybe I am, It's like 80 again today. It is supposed to rain tomorrow so Maybe our HEAT WAVE isn't here yet. Well back to yard work after another glass of water...I'm sweating up a storm here
We may have to deal with snow in our area but at least we don't worry about mud slides, fires and earthquakes!:D

I cant believe I am saying this but it is sunny and warm in Winnipeg!!! 16 degrees Celsius or 61 degrees Fahrenheit. For those of you stateside Winnipeg is known in Canada as Winterpeg. Hope spring springs up on ya soon.
John
I survived 38 years in Winterpeg Manasnowba before moving West. A bunch of hardy people live in those parts.

I should have taken more pictures, but forgot the camera. We stopped at Mancino's (sandwich and pizza shop) for lunch. Somebody said there was snow outside, but the roads were clear with some wet spots. Great to be outside and the weather was beautiful today. Sunny and 50F. Tomorrow's forecast is the same, so we'll be out again, enjoying the outdoors !!!

Glad you got to get it out. Are you trailering back to the house or is the road drying out a bit??

We loaded it on the trailer this morning, towed it down the gravel (mud road) to the blacktop. Our pole barn is on that road, so we parked there and left the trailer while we were gone. When we got back, our road was the same (probably will be for a couple of weeks) so we put it back on the trailer and brought it to the house. We'll tow it back to the pole barn tomorrow and head out in another direction. I'd like to get it on some back roads, but most of them are still icy or wet from snow melt, so we're sticking to the major roads for now. 120 miles today and hopefully tomorrow at least that, maybe more.

Wooo Hooo John! Here in my little burg in W TX it was 81 degress at 8:10pm. Coming back from the store what did I see? A SLINGSHOT coming down the road (looked like a black and gold two tone). The guy's hair sort of looked like Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive Inns and Dives; hair all over the place sticking in the air etc. His mouth was wide open and I couldn't tell if he was yawning, had a huge grin or had caught a bird in his mouth(I will say he was a kid....maybe 50). The girl beside him was wearing.....well, I kept looking, and LOOKING, but couldn't tell.....it wasn't a lot.....in this little town!!
I immediately thought of you and your Slingshot; those feelings of youth:), hair flying in the wind:), throwing away the inhibitions:ermm:, forgetting about the birds in the air .......
I hope you have tons of fun on your toy......just kind of keep decorum in mind and don't let those youthful feelings make you do anything....well, you know, TOO young....AND, watch those birds!! I had a buddy hit a June bug without a shield and it wedged in the corner of his eye. Talk about hollering and cussin' till I got it out!

It's just a little too chilly here to be riding without heavy pants and a coat, so that couldn't have been us (while here) but in this past year, DW and I have accepted a new mantra: (should have done it 10 years ago ) LOL

What a difference 3 days make. It was mid 30s and snow flurries on Sunday, today, it's 86F as I type this at 12:45. I'm in thermal shock :whistling:
