View Full Version : Dead Battery Question

We picked our Sprinter about 3 weeks ago from the dealer. We took it to storage and I checked and doubled checked that the battery disconnect was off. I stopped by yesterday and the battery was dead. My question(s) are...

1. Is this normal for a battery to drain in a matter of a couple of weeks with the Batt disconnect off.

2. Should I consider replacing the battery?

Thanks

ThanksThe battery "cutoff " really isn't a DISCONNECT, there are safety items and hardwired items that are never disconnected until the battery cables are removed.

So, yes it is normal

Funny, I was told by several salesman that the Battery Disconnect was to prevent "phantom drain" on the battery.

One day, I will learn not to believe everything I hear.

They are partially correct, without the disconnect the battery will die in 2 to 3 days. With the disconnect a week or so.

Before I had power to leave mine plugged in at the storage facility, I simply removed the ground on my battery. When I returned and was ready to use the trailer I simply hooked it back up.

It really isn't that difficult to put a real disconnect in the battery cable, after doing so it will completely disconnect the drain on the battery.

Funny true story: guy buys a $350,000.00 motorhome. salesman (years of experience) comes to say hi after we did some warranty work on it. Next thing I know he's in my bay asking if I could explain some lights on the auto level panel. I go out to the coach and look, In this particular system the lights on the panel will tell you which side is low...Explained to the customer and the salesman says " I never knew that"...

This is why I keep pushing for techs to also walk customer thru their new boats at our dealership. We regularly have customers bring their boat back in because feature aren't working right only to find it's operator error, and the common gripe is their salesman never showed them. Had one customer get upset about the upcharge to winterize his transom shower on his new boat this fall. Wasn't mad about the charge, was mad because he didn't even know he had a shower!!

Jwill, I have one of these(Not exactly this one) on my ground leg from battery to frame. Flip the switch and it's all disconnected. There are lots out there that are lockable so you need a key to turn it on, or like mine does, you pull the entire red switch off and I put it in with all wheel chocks and leveling plastics.

Yeah, our walk-thru was a complete joke. To every question that we would ask we got a standard answer from the kid, who looked liked he was still in high school, contact the manufacturer or look in your owner's manual. At one point when showing us the Sound Bar features, he said "This model doesn't come with AM/FM. To which my wife responded, "So what happens if you push the AM/FM button on the sound bar." His answer... that must be new for 2018.

Another true story. Our neighbor in Clewiston RV Park has a 2013 model Montana. We were discussing black tank rinses and how often to use it. He mentioned how he would like to have one and I said that one could be easily installed for about $60.00. His face lit up and he said "Let's go with it!" I walked him around to his water service panel and pointed out the black tank rinse connection and held my hand out, palm up. Nope, no $60.00 has greased my palm yet, but he has taken a good ribbing for awhile now.

There's a lot to learn about camping trailers, I know first hand, as I was a Noobie about a year ago. This is a great forum though, with an abundance of knowledgeable and experienced folks, so don't hesitate to ask away. So many on here have helped me tremendously over the last year or so.

its a pain to open battery cover on RV and to have to pop the hood on a car every time you shut it off and on.

harbor freight one I had for 8 years on the trailer and 442 always works.

Lots to learn indeed!! I recently had a dead battery issue. Apparently you can't pull the electric brake cable to act as a added measure of protection against rolling when parked on an incline for ANY amount of time :whistling: And I did have the battery disconnect turned off.

Brings up a question/concern of how the trailer disconnect emergency brake switch works if the ground or hot cable is cut and the battery disconnect switch is inserted. Are OP’s supposed to remember to turn switch on before hitting the road?

That brake is always hot and not affected by the battery disconnect from the manufacturer. If you added your own at the battery....that's a different story. It may not work.

The factory installed bypass switch typically does not affect the break-away switch, the electric hitch jack or landing gear, the memory circuits in the radio, the slide motors and the CO, LP and smoke/fire detectors (if they are also 12 VDC powered). Some trailers also have a remote control system. It's a "tossup" as to whether it is off or on with the bypass switch. Mine is operational. A friend has the same model trailer and his turns off with the bypass switch.

It is my understanding that the factory disconnect switch basically opens the circuit from the battery to the DC portion of the Power Distribution Panel. Therefore any DC device not powered/fused at the power distribution panel will remain powered up, wired/fused directly to the battery, when that disconnect switch is opened. Disconnect switch open and the converter does not charge the battery while connected to shore power.

I realize that internal factory installed battery disconnects probably do it right and keep propane detectors and the emergency brake switch hot. My question was prompted by the series of posts and pictures of the owner installed disconnects mounted on or near the battery. I’m pretty sure if you break the neutral to the frame with the disconnect the emergency brake switch won’t work. So with that thought going down the road and having a seperation of TV and TT will get a lot more interesting than normal if that could be considered normal!
So I’m thinking if you are going to install one that the positive hot lead should have the disconnect in it and the hot lead to the brake switch should be run directly to the battery positive terminal with whatever protective thermal device is in series with it now.
I ask these questions not to be a PITA but none of the postings I have seen regarding user installed disconnects mention or consider the brake disconnect. Not a problem if you switch the battery back in prior to hitting the road but with my current state of memory I for sure would forget at least once which is too much!

This is true and maybe I’m making too much of it but I believe that the brake switch is hardwired for a reason and to your point if getting your camper ready for a trip you would have the switch on for the preparation. But what happens when you are just taking it over to your BIL,s for some work or to the dealer who could be some distance away? I don’t think you are going to be concerned about the lights or fridge. And even if you notice that the lights don’t work are you going to go flip the disconnect switch to on?
I’m a great believer in Mr. Murphy.

You do know that if you take the battery out, you have to put it back in before the brakes work. It's pretty simple, turn the battery disconnect back on and then things work in the trailer, you don't turn it on nothing works in the trailer.

Break away switch is wired directly from the battery. Connection is usually in the junction box for the 7 way (umbilical) cord.

Break away has two wires. One side to the battery and the other side to the brake circuit ( blue wire ) in the junction box.

Bostongone

Chuckster, did not know that! Takes a lot of the concern of the disconnect switch being in either pos or neg. Will have to check my own rig to see how they do that. So you are saying this is universal amongst most manufacturers?
Thanks for the info!

If you have electric landing gear or an electric tongue jack and you wire a battery cutoff switch to the negative terminal on the battery, you can't hitch the trailer unless you turn that switch on. So, you can't tow without power to the break-away switch (unless you turn that switch off again after you hitch the trailer to your tow vehicle.

If you're still using "shoulder/arm power" to lift the tongue, then, yup, you'll need some memory cells left to be sure that you have power to the break-away switch.

Chuckster, on reconsideration as I had mentioned earlier it is my belief that the only connection to the TT frame is the single large white (usually) wire from the neg terminal so if the disconnect is in that wire and left open there will be no power to the brakes?

Bostongone

ADDING a disconnect at the battery lead(s) would disrupt power to the break away. My comment was referring to the factory set up.

So for those that park/store their unit for a couple weeks at a time unused, you either have a true power disconnect or you disconnect the terminals from the battery? Only choice to not drain it after a few weeks is what I am understanding. Even with the manufactures battery disconnect (due to several things still being powered).

I like to think of it as "disconnect some stuff".
I don't see any reason why you can't repurpose it, assuming it setup to be able to pass full-draw amperage.

You can "repurpose" the switch, but remember that when you remove "all power" from the trailer, you lose your ability to monitor for LP leaks and in some trailers, you also lose the ability to monitor CO and smoke/fire. Additionally, if you use your radio presets and time function, they will all be "reset to zero" when you turn power back on at your "re-purposed" switch.

In some trailers, you may also lose any presets on an automatic leveling system and the remote (if you have one) may also lose connection between the handset and the receiver.

One of the considerations at the factory to wire it as it is was to maintain safety systems operational and to allow operation of the slides, hitch/pin raising system and the braking system. I'd suspect that many people would "tow away to paradise" without even realizing they don't have any ability to slow their trailer if it happened to disconnect. So, it's probably as much a "keep them safe in spite of themselves" kind of consideration as it is a "they will never understand what they did if we wire it differently and they'll sue us at every opportunity" kind off mentality.

Right or wrong, if the switch were wired at the factory to disconnect all power, the batteries might last longer in storage, but how many people would wind up towing without any means of stopping a runaway trailer? It sort of comes down to the question of convenience at what cost to individual and public safety?

One of the first things I do is move the slide over on the brake controller to see if it is working.

But, I guess there is a warning label on hair dryers not to use them in the bathtub for a reason !

Pull the battery and run the same test. Your brakes will work.
Break-away won't work without a battery, however....

But, I guess there is a warning label on hair dryers not to use them in the bathtub for a reason !.

I don't know if you're aware of this, if so, just endure me for a moment, I'm positive there are a number of RV'ers who aren't aware so it's aimed at those who might not know.....

The brake controller is NOT wired to the break-away switch. The break-away switch gets its power from the trailer battery, NOT from the brake controller.

So, when you start to tow and "move the slide over on the brake controller to see if it is working" you do not check the emergency braking system, you only check the "normal trailer braking system".... When you move the brake controller lever the brakes will function whether you have a trailer battery switch on, off or even if there is no battery in the trailer at all.

The only way to functionally check the break-away system is to either hitch the tow vehicle, (do not plug in the 7 pin unbilical) pull the break-away switch pin and drive forward. You should feel the trailer brakes as they activate. THEN IMMEDIATELY REINSERT THE BREAK-AWAY SWITCH PIN so you deactivate the system. You can also jack a trailer wheel, pull the pin, spin the wheel and if it stops (or you can't turn the wheel) the brakes are applied. Don't forget to reinsert the pin in the break-away switch..... You might also hear the brake magnets "click" or "hum" if you don't jack the wheel. DON'T PULL THE BREAK-AWAY SWITCH PIN WITH THE UMBILICAL CABLE CONNECTED, YOU MAY DAMAGE YOUR TRUCK WIRING AND/OR BRAKE CONTROLLER......

Anyway, my point is to bring to the front, the fact that the "normal braking function" and the "emergency braking function" are independent and if there is no battery power in the trailer, your trailer emergency system can't stop the trailer and you don't check that system with the brake controller located in the tow vehicle.....

I'm not "picking on you" but hopefully bringing something to light that might help someone who doesn't understand their trailer braking systems: both of them.......

You know JRTJH you are right. I did not see the runaway trailer in your post and I went off down some turkey trail.

Pick away, that is how we all learn. We learn how things work and in my case, on this post, I learned I should read for understanding not speed.

Thanks, Hodgy.

Thank you for your insight. What I am running into since I can't plug the unit in when I store it all of these things are losing power anyway because the battery is dead by the time I get back to it to use again. My thought was to allow the jacks and remote to remain powered as long as they don't draw when turned off, but shut down the rest of it. The alarms mean nothing as it sits in storage with no one to hear them go off and at this point it has been a week my battery is gone. I get that the factory has a certain amount of CYA to think of but in reality this switch is worthless and right now one more thing to remember to turn on when I take off on a trip.

Electrically, a deep cycle lead acid battery will self-discharge when left open circuit after a prolonged period, starting about six months or so. The carbon black used in the construction of the battery case is a conductor, poor as it is after being mixed in the hard vulcanized rubber of the case. Similar to why certain weather conditions will lead to a static shock from the car when you touch it while most of the time you don’t.
For me, since we store at home, I’ll just keep shore power rigged and check water level every quarter.

Staying with the lack of a charged battery to operate the break away.

Assuming the battery is capable of holding a charge and all trailer and TV wiring is intact and connected. Anyone want to hazard a guess how long it would take for the TV alternator to charge a dead battery back to a state capable of operating the break away ?

Anyone ?

Anyone ?.

Way too many variables to even make a WAG (Wild A** Guess) much less a SWAG (Scientific WAG)...

That said, it depends on the condition of the battery, if discharging it completely caused a shorted or "bad" cell, it may never recharge enough to be capable. If there are two or more batteries in the system, they all "share the charge, so two would take twice as long as one to reach a specific charge state. If there is any corrosion on the terminals, that would affect the charge rate, if there is a problem with the 12VDC auto reset breakers, if electrical components inside the trailer are producing a load that the truck wiring is providing, less power would be available to use in charging the battery.... As I said, too many variables....

Typically, if everything is operational, the battery "could be" at sufficient charge state in an hour or so. If you're trying to run the furnace to warm up the trailer, run the refrigerator monitoring circuitry, run slides in and out to load, use the hitch jack or other electrical loads, all of them will dramatically affect how fast the battery charges....

Remember that you can't run the "full 85 amp capacity" of your truck's alternator through a 16 ga or a 14 ga "power lead through the umbilical 7 pin connector" The most you're going to get through that wire is about 4 or 5 amps "sustained" charge capacity, so really it's not a lot more than a typical "trickle charger".....
