So with my wife Peggy retiring at the end of this past Oct., the time has come for us to make an addition to our family. We have been wanting a dog for the last 6-7 years but just wouldn't do it with both of us working and being gone all day long. That just wouldn't have been fair to any pet, so we just didn't do it. So, the last couple of weeks we've been looking at a bunch of different breeds of dogs, trying to find what we hoped would be a perfect match for us. We wanted something that was a short hair dog, playful, affectionate, very intelligent, no known health problems that affects a particular breed, and a dog that would be sturdy for it's size and friendly with others...both humans and other pets.

So, without further ado, here is our new boy American Manchester Terrier. We will be picking him up during the weekend before Christmas on Monday. Mom is a national champion in one of the Manchester categories and he is a purebred little bundle of sweetness and spirit.

Good luck Vern with the new addition to your family!!! There exists a void in every person's heart that that person doesn't even know exists, until that person gets a loving pet!!!

Don't forget to get him a nice cozy bed for the camper!

Many years of healthy happiness with him :D

Regards,
Mike

Congratulations! We were in the same boat; working, no time for a pup. Retired and still didn't figure we had time until little pup found me one night while I was cooking out. I've had dogs all my life but never an "indoor" dog. I committed to puppy and I will tell you that I have never had a closer, more loving, attentive companion other than my wife. I think we literally have telepathy anymore - just like DW an myself. Work with the new pup, pay attention, love it unconditionally; it will return it many times over.

Thanks to all that responded.....it's going to be a LONG two weeks waiting to get him. I guess all the AKC dogs that breeders have are named, but from what I've read, there is a way to change their name once they are in their new home. As most of you know, Peg and I have been involved with Coaching/Instructing folks how to ride their motorcycles on a race track....doing track day. So it goes without saying that we are also big fans of professional motorcycle racing and in that circle is a MotoGP rider that is quite possibly the G.O.A.T.....Greatest of all Time.....an Italian rider named Valentino Rossi. And of course with us living in Tennessee, the Volunteer state, the college teams are called the "Vols". So putting the two together....the Vols and Valentino Rossi, there is a strong chance the little guy is going to be named.............

Wait for it.......................

Volentino Rossi! I'm sure we'll just call him Rossi. One of the breeders told me that the easiest way to make the transition, if they are already responding to their AKC name is to say both names together when you call them.....so we'll try that. Given name is Drake, but we like Rossi much better.

We raised AKC chows for a while. The process for changing the name isn't too complicated if I recall (years ago). Just make sure you get all the info/paperwork from the current owner/breeder.

One other thought; seems that the paperwork/name usually tries to show the lineage of the pup so keep that in mind.

Congrats! We have a special group of rescue cats, so I totally understand the unconditional love a pet gives. Treasure your new family member and he will fill your days with joy!!

Our German Wirehair Pointer (GWP) is from a well known breeder in Idaho. Her AKC paperwork lists her name as Leibchen vom Treberwolf. AKC "naming traditions" run deep with some breeders, in Leibie's case, she is from the 12th litter from the kennel (the first litter was the A litter and the 12th is the L litter). All the pup's from that litter were named with an "L" first name. The 13th litter was the "K" litter and so on....

You may be "interrupting a lineage tradition" by breaking the chain ???? With our GWP's, every kennel has their name in the mix "somewhere".... If you're considering showing the dog or competing with him, you might want to keep the kennel name until you start your own "lineage".... AKC pedigrees run pretty deep with some breeders and some breeds...... NAVHDA is a "stickler" for lineage reflection in their competition, so changing names can cause some problems.

I've no idea what your plans are for the pup or if you have even thought that far ahead, but ask around about the breed's protocols before changing names if you have plans for anything more than a fantastic companion.... You wouldn't want to burn any bridges before you get started.....

We found it easier to keep all the "formal lines intact" and we just called her Leibie. I don't think she would feel that she's "harmed" in any way, so we did the same when we got "Bubba".... You should have seen the look on the breeder's face when we told her what we were going to call her "precious pup"... We love him just as much calling him Bubba as she did calling him "Purepoint's Master Duke".... But in any shows or competition, he's PP's Master..... <sigh> LOL

Honestly, Bubba fits his personality much better than Duke's Master ever would, but his AKC paperwork reflects the kennel name. For us, it works just to have him laying in front of the fireplace and since he hasn't learned to read, chances are he'll never ask the question, "What's my real name?" LOL

Congrats on the new pup. He will make you so happy, and if he's like every other dog, will test your patience and resilience on other days. Glad y'all waited until you can focus your energy on the little guy.
Found that when our dogs (especially our labs) act out it's a reflection on us not putting our energy into them.
He is sure a handsome dude. Hope to see more of y'alls travels and adventures.

How big will he get?
Think he'll tree a squirrel?
I'd lean more towards Gary (Nixon) or Mert (Lawwill), or Jay (Springsteen), but that's just me. :)
I kinda need one that will bay a water moccasin and chase armadillos.

Yep...names are usually kept in line with the breeder's AKC kennel name. For instance my guy Jeter came from the "Y" litter of the kennel "von [blah blah blah]". Her litters followed the alphabet and this was the "Y" litter. My breeder just asked that we keep his name in line with her "Y" designation. That was tough to pick a Y name. I asked her for suggestions and she had all kinds of mythical and biblical names beginning with Y. Sorry none of those fit my GSD! So being a Yankee fan, he was AKC registered as "Yankee von [blah blah blah]". And we simply call him "Jeter"!

I like Rossi...perfect for your little guy!!! Again all the best with him.

Mike

Lots of interesting and informative responses.....thank you all. I certainly don't want to "step on anyone's toes" so to speak about changing names and causing issues, but we also want to call our dog the name that we want. Maybe we'll just leave the name on the paperwork as it is and call him Rossi with nothing official changed on the paperwork.

John, as far as the dog's future goes, we have absolutely no plans of breeding him, showing him, or anything like that. He is going to be our little companion and spend a lot of time being loved and played with and napping on our laps. We simply want a dog for being our buddy and pet.

Gearhead....since he is a Toy Manchester, he should not be over 12 lbs. That is the cutoff for the Toy vs. up to around 24-25 lbs for the Standard. The Standards are extremely hard to come by these days and if you find one for sale, you better move fast or they are gone. The Toys are a little more available, but not a lot.

I believe it was William uh, uh, Shatner who said "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Call him what you like. He won't know the difference. And he will smell just.....well, he'll just smell. A dog needs a little smell to know they're a dog. We love 'em all. Good on ya, Xrated!:D

That's a cute pup Vern. Y'all are going to have lots of fun with him. We were talking today about our dog and the fact that she makes us laugh and smile more every day than we ever did before we got her. Congrats again.

Thanks everyone. He's only been here for 48 hours and he is adapting pretty well to our house. He's doing very good with his potty training, especially for being in a totally new environment. He's also learning what NO means. He's so damn cute that it just melts my heart, but we also are going to have to stick with what is OK behavior and what's not. He made me bust out laughing this evening. Peg bought a tent bed for him and it's in our living room next to the fireplace. So this evening, he was laying on the floor chewing on his chew bone while we ate supper and watched the evening news.....perfectly content. Then, all of a sudden, he decided he was going to run into his little "man-cave" dog bed. With the chew bone in his mouth, he took off at a run right into the cave. In fact, he ran in so fast that his momentum carried him all the way to the wall behind it......Thud. We both busted out laughing and he turned around and walked out with a look on his face like......What?

When puppy first came to us she was a baby. As she progressed we always bought her toys to let her "chew" on stuff. We did that from day 1 and she has never offered to bite/chew anything other than what we tell her she can have. Now, she has countless toys and we spend more money on "stuff" for her than we ever dreamed of spending on the kids back when......

Yea, I'm pretty amazed at how well he's doing. I've never seen or had a dog that wants to be with their people as much as this breed does. They are just lippin full of affection. It's going to be so much fun having him here, which will offset the work involved in training him.

That is our way of thinking also....he's got 6-7 toys to chew on. So far he hasn't chewed on anything that he's not supposed to... except my face. He seems to have a fascination with my Gray goatee when I'm holding him close to my face....but he does respond well to NO.

Congrats on your new pup - he's adorable! As far as his name goes, I foster small dogs for a local rescue - some owner surrenders, some strays. Names are given/changed frequently, no matter the age of the dog. Dogs adjust easily. I'd leave your pup's AKC name alone and just call him the name you like as his kennel name (the name you plan on calling him). When I was younger, we did the same thing with horses. They may have had a registered name used for show purposes, but most had a stable name that they were called on a daily basis.

Well, Rossi has been here almost 4 weeks now and his progress is amazing. He is growing in height and weight, length, and Peggy has working on his training. He now knows sit, stay, come, heal, and of course he is using his litterbox consistently....every time. One of the things we have been working on is for him to go to his tent bed in the living room while we eat. We sit on the sofa and watch the evening news while we eat, so he is only 8-10' away and can see us. He loves to be on our laps if we are sitting, so this one has been a little more difficult to train him on, but he's doing well with it. So he does it, but no one said that he had to be happy about it. So here is a link to a short video that shows "The Earthquake" that is going on while he is entertaining himself in the man-cave while we eat......
