View Full Version : toilet/black tank issues

We’re full time stationary in a new to us 2012 322FRL. When we had the black tank pumped the first time we used the flush. After that the toilet burped when flushed. Worked fine for awhile and then it clogged. Enzymes, draino, hot water. Nothing clears the clog. Liquid is getting past. We’re not using it, pouring hot water, plunging, snaking & nothing works. Any ideas? :banghead:

From reading that you "had it pumped" means not hooked up the sewer connection? Sounds like you have the dreaded "poop pyramid" which usually indicates not enough water when flushing. Drano & sinking snaking will most likely just damage the tank & seals. If you get hooked up to sewer my suggestion would be leave valve open & open the flush valve & run hose at high pressure nozzle will allow & keep running til the pyramid breaks up & washes down.

Fill it with water and Rid-X. Leave it for a few days. Then flush it real good.

Buy a wand and hook it to a water hose from the outside. Open toilet in bathroom and put in the want and have at it. That will level a pryamid. Most of the tank flushing gizmos that fit to the outside won't work that well unless used every time you dump the tank and even then, it depends on how straight a shot from tank to drain. If there is an elbow, they don't work all that well.

If choosing this method the tank needs to be filled with liquid enough to cover the pyramid & would take weeks rather than days, that's why it's advertised to use every 30 days.
The wand would be quicker with better results if you are connected to sewer.

It has worked for us.

I have used Rid-X both ways, actually same day with warm water.
Just had this issue as we had a non RV guest that didn’t seem to use enough water and too much paper.
Put about a 1/3 cup of Rid-X and about a qt. of warm water down the toilet and let it set for about an hour. We have a in tank flush device in the middle of the tank. With only the 1/2 gal. of fluid in the tank from the treatment I run the flusher for four minutes with the blade valve closed. At four minutes opened the valve and watched the clear elbo saw some clumps of paper go out.
Tested again, still a burp so this time cap full of laundry soap, and cap full of fabric softener and chased with about 1/2 gal. of hot water, let this set about 30 minutes. Then repeated the four minute flush, this time lots more clumps of paper water was not very dark.

In the past I have added about a 1/4 box of Rid-X to the tank at the end of a trip, then let it sit for about two weeks then drained and power flushed, even the sensors worked for awhile after that. :D

Also be very careful about what kind of toilet paper you use as some brands do not break up and cause lots of problems.

Yup! Part of my explanation during walk through.

How much Rid-X should one use per gallon of holding tank? The box is meant for a 1500 gallon septic tank; should I ratio it accordingly (assuming a full BW tank)?

Thank you.

By the way, I attempted a search on "Rid-X" and there were no hits found. I guess I don't understand the search algorithm.

Rid-x is designed for a “ permanent” type of tank meaning one that isn’t emptied.

Obviously the more you add to a 60 gal black tank, the faster the enzymes will “eat” and dissolve the solids. I don’t really remember how much we added.

We have found over the years that Scott Rapid Dissolve found most everywhere, including Wally World is the best. And feels the closest to a softer tissue. Most newbies simply cannot catch on that the black tank valve should not be kept open and that extra water should be used with every flush.

Thanks. I’ll ratio it out and add a little more. The tank needs a good cleaning!

I worked on one that had the pyramid. I bought a bottle of the best stuff the rv store had and dumped the whole thing in and topped off with water. Let it sit about a week, drained it good as new.

While we FT in ours I have been having a hydro-flush professionally done on our tanks as regular maintenance twice a year. I have found that even with using Scott Rapid Dissolve TP and using lots of water with every flush and lots of water and more flushing when dumping, the tanks still accumulate debris, especially the black & galley tanks (bad design IMO to have the washer drain into the galley tank as grease, food particles and lint do not mix well together, especially when draining out of a smaller diameter pipe).:banghead:

We also use Tank Rx which seems to help keep the sensors working on a consistent basis.

For those that have not heard of hydro-flushing, they do this with a pressure washer using a small diameter hose with a high pressure jet that is fed in through the drain side of the holding tanks. If a company tells you they hydro-flush and go in through the toilet, or tell you they can't flush your gray tanks run away quick and find someone who does the real deal.:D You'll be happy you did!

Thanks, I’ll try that. I was using the forum’s search engine without success.

Thanks, it worked like a champ: 107 hits. I wonder why the forum search engine doesn't give any hits?

Not sure why the site search function is not working, but this is not the first time. Searching with Google as suggested by madmaxmutt is a great option, especially when you know the information is there but search is failing you.

Searching is Google's business. The search functions on other products (even using Google appliances) isn't nearly as robust. This same issue happens on every thread I am a member of.
