Couple of winterizing questions

Got my trailer mostly winterized.

I'm wondering if I need to put any antifreeze into the black tank flush line? If so, how do I get antifreeze into it without buying a pump? Same with the city water hookup, do I need antifreeze in that line? Again, how do I get it in there? What about the fresh water tank overflow line?

Last question. Should I leave my taps open or closed? If I open them, even with the pump off, the antifreeze seems to drain out of the lines because there's still some pressure in the lines.

I purchased a brass adapter at HD that allows me to pump antifreeze from my outdoor shower hose to the black tank flush using my TT’s pump. I remove the spray handle and thread the fitting to the shower hose then the black tank flush fitting. After flushing the outside shower line with antifreeze, I flush the black flush line using the TT’s pump.

I close my my taps.

I bought this hand pump (https://www.amazon.com/Camco-36003-Hand-Pump-Kit/dp/B0006IX7YW/) to use in conjuction with a winterizing kit that I added to the freshwater system. First, I manually pump in about 2 cups of antifreeze into the city connection (while one faucet is open). Then I use the water pump to complete the rest of the process, opening and closing one faucet at a time. After the freshwater system is winterized, I attach the manual pump to the black tank flush and add about 2 cups of the pink stuff.

Thanks for bringing up these questions. I didn't even think to pump the pink stuff into the black water flush line. Now that you brought it up, you bet I'm going out and will winterize that flush line. Here is a vid I found that addresses exactly that and as other posters have talked about.

Cheap insurance for sure to winterize the flush line. But does that line hold water/is it really necessary?

If you blow out the flush line you won't need to pump pink int it. Same with the toile flush. We have several hard freezes each year and have never had an issue with doing it this way.

My Cougar came with a blue coiled hose that has a quick connect for the outdoor shower faucet on one end and a male garden hose fitting on the other. All I have to do is connect it to the black tank flush port, and open the faucet. I do this last after the pink stuff has been pumped throughout the rest of the system.

It would be pretty easy to rig up a male garden hose fitting on the end of your outdoor shower hose, provided that it is relatively close to the black tank flush.

Tbos is also right. If you do a good job of blowing out the black tank flush with compressed air, the need to add RV antifreeze becomes minimal. I do both because of the long periods of single digit temps or colder up here in the Adirondacks.

when I bought my Cougar I noticed that quick connect fitting at the outdoor shower faucet but never asked the previous owner for the hose. Would you know what size hose yours is?

I think most are 1/4" hoses, the fitting on the male end is same as an air coupling fitting but it has the more flatter ring/collar on the fitting. Basically, there are 2-3 standard male air fittings and the one they use is what I'd call the bigger one. What I found online its called a tru-flat automotive quick coupler.

I've never cut hose to see what size it is inside. It appears to be crimped onto the quick connect fitting so there's no way to remove a clamp and look there either.

Once I blow out the lines I just pour anti freeze into P-traps and into the toilet bowl. Never had a issue. And we do get some really freezing weather here.

We got a little snow today but it's just at freezing, so I'll be winterizing tomorrow. After blowing out I will still do the traps and lines with antifreeze, just to be safe. I got 4 gallons. Still have to locate the water heater bypass. We normally get down to 10-15F for a few days now and then.

The way we winterized our previous 2 campers was through the water pump. On our 2015 Keystone Cougar I am embarrassed to admit I can't seem to find the water pump. Can you include that infor in this thread? Thank you~:facepalm:
