Full of hot air - or want to be

Good morning everyone, today this newbie would like insight on what portable air compressors you all use inasmuch as RV tires and modern tow vehicle tires have some fairly high pressures associated with them. Oh, did I say COST effective compressors?!

I use a Harbor Freight 3 gallon pancake compressor. Light, sturdy, fits my needs and cheap. On sale with a 20% off coupon it was under $40.

I have enjoyed using the Vivair 400P RV for three years. I had a standard electric pancake compressor until the first year needing "air" on the side of the highway and no where to "plug-in!" Since then I purchased the Vivair 400P RV which is 12 volt. Yes they are around $250.00 however it doesn't matter how much you save... if there aren't any places to "plug in!" If you have a generator already, then no worries an electric will be just fine.

I have two HF "small" air compressors. One is a 3 gal pancake and one is a 3 gal "hot dog" type. Both are rated at 100 PSI and, as stated above, less than $40 with the coupon (available almost everywhere). I found that they were exceptionally good with my previous LRD (8ply) tires at 65PSI but it is difficult to inflate my current LRE (10ply) tires to 80PSI. Both of those compressors "will make it" to 80PSI eventually, but it's a long wait to get from about 70 to 80. I preferred the pancake style because it has a small storage compartment attached (great place to store the air chuck) and thought it was a good choice for LRC (50PSI) and LRD (65PSI) tires, not so easy to use with LRE (80PSI) or LRF (95PSI) tires and won't work for LRG (110PSI) tires.

Anyway, with the hassles airing up to 80PSI, I bought a FINI 1.2 gal "hot dog" style at Lowe's. It's rated at 135PSI, is faster to air up my tires to 80PSI and much smaller storage space required. It has an attached "lock on air chuck" that allows the compressor to sit beside the tire during use without having to hold the chuck on the valve stem. I keep the compressor, a 25' air hose and all the attachments in a "beach bag" that lays on top of a plastic storage container in my basement area of the fifth wheel. It's smaller, airs 10ply tires faster and stores easier. For me, it was worth the $117 price. I now have two "little HF compressors" sitting on a shelf in the garage. My DW keeps eyeing them with comments like, "When we have a garage sale...." So far I've managed to keep her out of the pole barn when she's "in the garage sale mode"......

We have the 3 gal Porter Cable pancake compressor from Lowe's. I had no luck with the HF 3 gallon so I returned it and bought this. It does a reasonable job for a reasonable price.

I do have some of the 12vdc low pressure, large volume pumps for the air mattresses, tubes, etc., but the compressor is still best for topping off the tubes.

I carry a 3 gal. Porter Cable compressor for when I have 120vac and a Viair 400 12vdc compressor for when I don't have 120vac.. Both work very well. I also have a little Kobalt 12vdc compressor that I used when I had air bags but I no longer have the bags on this truck so it lives in the barn now.

Whatever brand/type of compressor you buy, pay attention to the CFM rating at the higher pressures. You will find that many of the smaller compressors deliver less than 1 CFM. Look for something like 2.5 to 3.5 CFM.

I carry my 6 gal Bostich pancake (only because I haven't found a smaller one with a high enough CFM rating).
