Just received a replacement shank to replace the I'm guess forged piece that came with my WDH which I didn't care for from the get go. Not long enough and it had a pointed end when looking down on it. The new shank is a solid steel welded piece and is really nice. However it does not get rid of my issue as I thought it would. It appears (have not taken measurements yet) that my receiver is a tad bit over sized on the I.D. I never had an issue running a 2" ball with a 3 1/4" drop down hitch as gravity is on it's side. Now back to the WDH. I have the ball 2 5/16" above the receiver center line and Newton want's to bring back down either in a counter clockwise or clockwise direction and it caused my clevis pin to bend. No good :eek:. Is this a common issue when running a hitch above center ?

1500 comes with a 2" receiver. 3500 (probably 2500 too) cones with 2.5" stsndard. Maybe it's aftermarket?

My 2500 has a 2.5" receiver. 2" needs a sleeve to fit properly. I'm betting that's the issue here.

Just a WAG here, but are you using the correct size pin for your hitch? By "clevis pin" I'm guessing you mean the large pin that slides through the receiver and hitch to "hold them together". There are two different size holes, and two different size pins. Class 2/3 pins and holes are 1/2" while Class 4/5 pins and holes are 5/8".

Is it possible that you have a class 2/3 hitch bar installed in a class 4/5 receiver? In other words, do you have a "small hole" on one of the parts and a "large hole" on the other? You may have a "mixed" setup or you may have a small pin in a "big hole system". ????

As I said, just a WAG, you may have already ruled all of this out before ever asking the first question, but ??????

If I interpreted the last reply from the OP correctly, he's using a 2" stinger in a 2.5" receiver, without the sleeve.

Bolo4u, I also thought about that, but the way he posed his response to hankpage gave me the impression that his equipment is all 2". and his truck is a 1500, so chances of having a 2.5" receiver is pretty slim (I think) :confused:

Good Morning everyone. Here are some findings to help with why my clevis pin got bent on my first trip out with the WTH set at an 8" rise at near maximum height available per the shank.

Measurements are as follows:

Original forged shank O.D.
width - 1.9900 + or - factor of 0.0080
thickness - 2.0000 + or - factor of 0.0000

Replacement steel welded shank O.D.
width - 2.0065 + or minus factor of 0.0025
thickness - 2.0050 + or minus factor of 0.0010

Receiver I.D.
width - 2.0855 + or - factor of 0.0145
height - 2.1165 + or minus factor of 0.0015

Overall play between shank and receiver are as follows:

Original forged shank
width - average gap of 0.0955
thickness/height - average gap of 0.1165

Replacement steel welded shank
width - average gap of 0.0790
thickness/height - average gap of 0.1115

While the numbers indicate that either shank is loose in the receiver this is not enough to cause the shank to truly roll over. There is however this to consider. The hole in both the original forged shank and receiver are of very tight tolerance when first used and this would cause me to have to lift the shank to insert the clevis pin. That would suggest that the shank is now setting true to center in height with gaps both top and bottom of shank at the pin location being equal. But is that the reason for the pin to become bent ?

More findings to follow soon as to what really happened.

One way to take care of the bottom clearance would be to have someone run 3 or 4 beads of weld on the bottom of the shank and then grind it down to fit.

True. Another way is to cut a piece of sheet metal approximately 1"x 2" of appropriate thickness and weld it in place on all four corners. A lot less grinding involved.

What could the issue be with a ball mount being as wide as this one https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/4b6ff6_5952356757b64672bbf8635f4604a192.pdf that would cause a hitch pin to bend ?
