Wife bought me this for my birthday. I have been having a blast killing every fly I can find. Even tried to attract the little buggers so I have targets to shoot. Shoots plain table salt, like a mini shotgun. I know, I know simple things for simple minds.

I have one in "Camo" so I can sneak up on the little buggers. Use it by the grill and can salt the burgers at the same time.

I've been meaning to add one of these to the armory. I like the price of the ammo, too.

My concern about those is the salt being spread around. As salt will kill grass, flowers, etc. A few years ago I discovered carpenter bees had started making holes in our front porch. I am a firearms owner, hand loader and occasional caster of my own bullets. (I am not trying to create the dreaded gun thread, so bare with me). I ran across a discussion on a gun board about carpenter bee loads. I got onboard and had a blast. I use 38 spl, .8 grains of Blue Dot, and crushed walnut out of the tumbler. I would drop in the powder, us a wadding made from a manila folder, fill the case of crushed walnut and tamp another wadding on top. That wadding would occasionally let go and dump the crushed walnut in my Ruger Gp100. So I started using candle wax to seal the "round". I have blasted carpenter bees, wasps, dirt daubers, etc. I got to have too much fun with it. I set up a test range with different powder loads in .1 grain increments tested on printer paper and settled on the .8 grain powder load.

Let me know how many times you guys have to shoot a horse fly or deer fly with it to kill them. I haven't been able to do it yet and have had to resort to a fly swatter. And that's just not as fun. I haven't figured out if I'm too close, not close enough or what to them. Or maybe my gun is just defective and it's not operator error...

What kind of salt are you using? Can you use sea salt? Or larger?

Directions that came with mine said to use normal table salt, so that's what I did. Don't know if it will take larger grains of salt. I will have to empty the little salt container on it and check out the hole size. Hmm....

Regular table salt only. If you are at an angle you must be close but straight on it's good to almost 12". The amount of salt it uses could not hurt any lawn. Practice on a sheet of paper to see the size of the pattern at different distances. The DW says that the only difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toys..... After a deer fly or green head draws blood ..... revenge is sweet.

The amount of salt it uses is minimal at best. You get about 50 shots on a tablespoon of salt. I guess if there were a 100 of these running around a campsite at the same time they might be able to find some salt somewhere.
I spill more salt at the grill.

Now if I can get this Red Dot sight mounted.

A red dot sight or a laser? For what? You won't need one for this salt shooter and mounting one will be difficult anyway.

Hey, Hey!! I'm headed back to our house in TX and Sam's is only 60 miles from there. I'm to be there for 3 days before heading back here to NM so I'm going to go get me one. It'll beat the heck out of sitting out here on the deck shooting yellow flies (biting), flies and etc. with a .40 or 9mm:cool: And it looks less expensive:D

I am on my second one.

A friend of mine invested in the company and they sent him 2, early run, units... he gave one of them to me.

My grandson left it out side and the moisture caused the hinge pin for the salt cover to rust, which snapped the lid the next time I opened it.

I picked up the second unit at Cabela's a year or so ago.

It works best if it is not too close to the target, 10 to 12 inches.

I have blasted horse flies and dropped them with one shot.

I should just leave it in the camper and keep the kiddies from it... it is mine I tell you.

DW and I also invested early in this and also received two of the early run "weapons." Just a hint to those of you who have one: Try to empty it of salt if it is going to sit awhile. Moisture makes it hard to get moving again.

I live in, and despise, Illinois... however it does get a bad rap. With the exception of some counties near Chicago, Illinois has fairly generous firearms laws. Other than needing a FOID and not allowing NFA items (mostly), everything goes.

Their hunting rules suck though...

You can get one on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Bug-A-Salt-LAWN-GARDEN-2-0-Edition/dp/B01M173US6/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1500075973&sr=1-2&keywords=bug+a+salt

It's a bit more than Sam's, but by the time you add tax and transportation to Sam's it's probably a bargain to have UPS deliver it to your door LOL

I was grilling some USDA Prime beef on the grill this past weekend and had to break my bug-a-salt out of the trailer.

Great fun... blasting flies, grilling Prime beef and having an adult beverage

Thank you! Was finally home and had a horse fly someone let in the house. Kept it about 10" away. Bam! Dropped the big bugger! Apparently I was too close to them before, as in 4-5" and that was just too close. Operator error, fixed!
