Tire Thread #2,878,222- help me decide

So I convinced myself to replace the tires on my 2 year old Cougar 336 bhs. It has Trailer King ST235/80R16. I have not had any issues, they look "ok" but I went to storage after the long winter and found that one was completely flat. it has a very tiny leak cause I pumped it up and a week later it was down maybe 5 lbs. The other 3 tires were all solidly still at 70lbs pressure.. I am more worried about blowout in general.. They are dated 49-14.

After reading the many informative threads here I went out to my two local tire shops. I had decided on the Carlisles before I started my research.

Here is what I was quoted "

$560 for 4 Carlisle's all in at Discount tire
$773 for 4 Towmax Str 2's at Les Schwab
$855 for 4 Sailun 14 play tires at Les Schwab


I had not heard of the Towmax. Any thoughts on the above? Cost to me is generally never the issue im looking for quality, but on Trailer tires you have to pitch every 5 years anyway wondering why I would ever spend the $855. I make about 5 trips a year, one is probably 1,000 miles, the other four are >250 miles.

Tow Max...Blow Max (aka China bombs). Get the Carlisles or Maxxis.

i agree that Maxxis are the better of those listed. I put over 50000 miles on the last set on my 5th wheel. I am religious about maintaining air pressure and rotation on a regular schedule.

I have heard about maxxis too, but the reason I didn't list them was they are basically hard to find in this area. the only two main dealers I know of are Discount Tire and Les Schwab. I just searched their website and America's Tire is listed so I will inquire there I guess too.

For the money, and from my experience with them, I think you would do fine with the Carlisle Radial Trail HD (I would buy 5). If you can find the Maxxis they would be good too....just look at the pricing. Availability is the issue for Maxxis here as well. Towmax...forget about. Sailun.....very good tire but as you see; a nice price.

I'd suggest you check the pricing on Carlisle Radial Trail HD tires at WalMart. There have been a couple of threads on the forum this week that indicate some very attractive pricing. 235 85R16 12 ply for $77 each (if I remember correctly) and similar pricing advantages on other sizes, with free shipping to the store... That's about $308 plus mounting/balancing/tire disposal which wouldn't be over $100 tops, so $408 vs Tire Discount's price of $560... something to consider

Discount Tire has had to order my 2 sets of Maxxis. Just 1-2 days.
I would go Carlisle HD if it gets all complicated.

Maybe WalMart. I checked their price on Carlisle HD a week or 2 ago. I think the 235 80 16 was $77. Almost bought them.

The latest Radial HDs from Carlisle have a great reputation on these boards and other forums. 3 major retailers (DT, Walmart, and Amazon) can get them to you relatively quick.

Remember to check the DOT date code on the tire before the tires are installed. Anything older than 6 months should be avoided as trailer tires have an inherent "shelf life", no matter if in-service and mounted on wheels or if stacked on pallets in a warehouse. My local DT retailer attempted to sell me a set of 11 month old Carlisle's several weeks ago. I declined the purchase after the rep stated that was the newest he had at his warehouse. So, instead, I ordered them from Walmart in the hopes of the DOT date less than 6 months. If not, I'll decline the purchase again and order them from somewhere else.

Another source for the Carlisle's is CW. I got mine from them but had to haggle to try to reach DT's pricing...almost. They were very fresh (about 6 weeks old).

None of the Walmart near me have tire services. Nice price otherwise.

I looked at the maxxi website. For ST235/80R16 10PR TL M8008 ST RADIAL. 244$ per tire. Is that for real ?

WalMart will sell the tires onlnine and ship them to any of their retail stores, no need to have a tire center in the store, and you can take them to any tire dealer to have them mounted on your wheels. You might want to explore that option. $244 per tire??? I've never seen Maxxis that expensive. GEESH !!!

Have you considered LT truck tires?
While LT's have a lower weight rating for the same size, the size you listed should have a capacity of 3,042# each, that is a total of 12,168# almost the total of your 5er GVWR. and you likely carry 2,500# on the pin.
The Sailun tires have a very high rating but are likely "G" rated for 110 psi, likely more than your rims are rated for.

Trailer tires are one place I don't try to scrimp on money.

Taking them to a tire shop next week to have them mounted, balanced and installed for $15 each. Tire shop couldn't come close to Wmarts price when I asked, they wanted $113 each. Told me to get them from Wmart and they'd still put them on.

We purchased Carlisle's 3 + years ago and have now traveled approx 22,000 KM in various conditions i.e. Rain heat etc. with full loads as we are snowbirds. All that I can say is that they have performed very well they maintain pressure for long periods, they still have lots of tread left and show no sign of cracking etc. We will replace with the same tires when the time comes

Well you might give some thought to a set of LT tires.
I just put a set of Yokohama YK-HTX 235/85-16 E's on our 2005 Copper Canyon, our GVWR is about 150# greater than yours, so should not be an issue with capacity. Stronger tire built to work on your TV, which the ST can't be used on!

Load rated at 3,42# ea, good for 12,168, which is more than enough considering about 20% of your 12,235# GVWR is on the pin.
