Back up camera question

Looking at installing a backup camera on a Carbon 327. Have looked at putting one on the top of the rig, but have looked at possible license plate camera. Wondering if anyone has suggestions, or recommendations.

Given those two options I would opt for the camera up on the top. Better view, most likely a wider angle of view and less likelihood of damage.

I have had high mount on two trailers now. One I installed in that location myself and the other came mounted there from the factory. In fact, every camera mounted as a factory option I ran across when shopping for our RV was high mounted. I prefer the extra visibility the high mounting point affords.

Most of my experience is with the 120 degree camera I installed. I aimed it back so I could not quite see the bumper of the trailer and not quite see the horizon behind on level ground.

I can't speak from experience to both options because I did not install a license plate version but I would think if the solution you are looking at is a wireless one, getting the most height when mounting the camera will afford the best signal strength at your tow vehicle.

I added one to my Carbon 31, mounted up top and tied the power into the center clearance light. Great view and can see 120 degrees.

I added my wireless up high for a better signal and so I could see all the vehicles behind the camper not just the one directly behind.

I would think with a licence plate cam you wouldn't be able to see cars coming up fast on the left and right if you had another car too close behind you? With mine up high I can see quite a ways back over top of quite a few vehicles, if your on a 4 or 6 lane road being able to see that far back is great insurance that your not pulling into a lane that has a fast moving vehicle coming up.

I use the same Voyager wireless system a Hdrooling (above). It's not cheap, but really a great RV specific system. I also bought a second auto-pairing camera for my enclosed car-hauler trailer. All I have to do is re-pair the display between the two trailers when I switch (a 5 second procedure). Works great!

As for mounting, I went high for obvious reasons (toy hauler garage door)

I did add an extended transmitter antenna to the cam on the 5'er due to the added length. Also, I have converted this system over to plug in as a video source to another display (GPS) and I have the original 7" Voyager display (also Cam receiver) available for sale. All you would need is to buy the auto-pairing cam(s). PM if interested.

I remember Mouse posting pics of your new Toyhauler on facebook, congrats and enjoy.

Good luck with your search for a back up camera because they make towing a larger camper so much safer while rolling down the highway and backing up.
