With all of the "you need a 1 ton for that rig" talk that occurs here, I was amused last night when The Long, Long, Trailer was on TCM.

They towed 32' New Moon with 2 different convertibles. First, a 1953 Mercury Monterey, but they had to upgrade to a 1953 Lincoln Capri later in the movie. They needed the Lincoln's 205 HP V8 to tow through the Sierra Nevada's!

Kinder, gentler times with less complication. I'd miss my iPad/WIFI and Cummins-powered pickup, but I'd have a brand new Nomad in 1955!

The long long trailer - best camping movie. My 6 and 9 year old g-kids want to watch that movie every time they camp with us. It's a classic.

Here are a few of "oldies". Most of them I've seen on the road (many years ago) and some of them are in the "RV Museum" in Elkhart, Indiana.

In many of these, you can see that air bags and WD hitches weren't yet common options... (Neither had yet been invented)...

I saw an old restored Suburban from I guess the early-mid fifties the other day. Looked very good. Maybe had modern wheels and tires on it. I immediately began thinking about a 502 Chevy crate engine, A/C, 4 bucket seats; towing one of the new retro trailers.
Yeah matching paint too, maybe.

I'm guessing surge brakes on those old units?
