My new fifth wheel held up real well to the rigors of the Alcan highway and some out of the way places in Alaska. I am headed back south and tied down tonight at Northern Lights RV park in Dawson Creek, BC. All systems and appliances are still working, no tire problems or other mechanical issues.

I ran almost all the main roads except the stretch between Fairbanks and Denali and the road out to Whittier. Went to McCarthy (rough) and across the old Denali highway (rougher) from Cantwell to Paxson.

Going to stop in Hardin Montana and visit family and Cortez, Colorado so I may be out another month.

I would like to express my appreciation for a positive post on your trip! All the negative posts about tires/TV/RV quality/etc/etc/etc, had made me hesitant to even take a trip in my 5th wheel! Again, much appreciated post!

We just got back from Alaska, although we are not as brave as you are. Flew into Anchorage and spent two plus weeks in the Seward, Homer etc area. Assume you know about getting to Whittier: one-way tunnel that shares space with the railroad. Glad you had a good trip as we did as well.

Thanks for the report, DW and I are planning that trip in a couple years. We've been to Alaska, but never in the RV. Safe travels, God speed.

I will probably move a few people in an unfriendly manner here, but I'll say it anyway. Flying into Anchorage and spending 10 days in a rented RV or traveling from motel to motel and flying home is just "bearly" having been to Alaska.
Save your vacation money for awhile, save your vacation days and haul your butts and your RV to Alaska. There is another whole world out there to be seen and Alaska Airlines is not the way to do it.
Yes, I am ready to take a butt-chewing for what I said, but if you missed British Columbia or White Horse or three dozen other places along the way then you need a Do-Over!

Its a trip that needs to be experienced via the Alaska Highway and/or the Cassiar Highway. Smithers, at the southern end of the Cassiar is an interesting little town with very nice folks in residence. Tip: Louise's Kitchen in Smithers has the best pirogis on the planet, BTW.

Having said that, taking the airlines to Los Anchorage at least gets you there, but remember, when you get to Los Anchorage, Alaska is just an hour away...if you catch my drift.

There's a lot to see between the Manley Hot Springs/Fairbanks area and Homer/Seldovia/Halibut Cove on the Kenai Peninsula to the south on the road system. If you make it to Talkeetna (a railroad stop on the Alaska railroad between Anchorage and Fairbanks) take a flight seeing tour of Denali (Mt. McKinley at 20,320').

Alaska is a big state. If you cut it in half, Texas would still be the second largest state. I'm proud to say that my wife's grandfather was a pioneer of Alaska in the old days when the FAA was known as the CAA. Read some of Alaska's history before going there to appreciate the history of America's 49th and largest state.

So good to hear positive things about traveling to Alaska. My husband and I and two other RV friends will make the trip May 2017. This will be the first big trip in our 5th wheel. I can't wait, but am pretty anxious. Thank you all for your posts.

My wife and I leave for Alaska tomorrow morning! This trip is a cruse on the Inside Passage (yes, getting there by air) to celebrate our 50th anniversary. One year we flew to Anchorage, rented a motor home and traveled the state for two weeks. One year I went with my college roommate and two of his kids and backpacked in Denali. One year I went with two friends flew into Anchorage, walked across the airport to private seaplane operator and flew back into College Fiord to a U.S. Forrest Service cabin and fished for two weeks!

My point? Get there any way you can and enjoy the journey!

I tried for years to get to Emendorf, USAF kept saying Eielson. Said yes to. Fairbanks (finally), and they changed their mind and sent me to Omaha. Needs of the Air Force.

Blackrock....get on back down here. Probably ain't but 110 in Phoenix. I need to pick your brain on the Superstitions. I got to chase down the old "Hermit of the Superstitions".
I'm toying with the idea of a Alaska trek with the recently acquired Bigfoot cabover.
Hey, I read Michner's book!!!

Thanks Desert185 for the travel tips. DW and I are treveling to Denali from Virginia Beach, VA next spring. Will save your recommendations. Are you diesel? I have a short box with a small fuel tank. Just wondering if finding diesel is going to be problematic.

Diesel isn't a problem on the AK Hwy.

Been to Alaska many times, but have never taken my 5ver with me, or driven. Nice to hear about people making that trip, and it's possible.

Fortunately have a friend living there and have been camping and fishing with them, making it less of a need.

Whether you take your own, or make other arrangements you need to make the trip. Just the most wonderful scenery, wildlife, fishing, and different things to do. Just got back from a 3 week trip, and traveled off the grid. Volunteered to work on building a new church in Gambell, on St Lawrence Island.

We flew into Anchorage earlier this year and rented a Class "C" for two weeks. It was a great trip with over 1800 miles of driving. If we decide to do a return trip we will take the fiver.
Next long trip will be Nova Scotia.
