The day I brought my new Outback home, I upgraded to 16" wheels and Duravis R250 tires. I chose to get a matching spare as well. The problem with that was the factory spare tire mount. So I made this:

I bought the hub and spindle online for fairly little $$$.

The hub is a 6-lug for a 3,500 lb axle. It does not have brake provisions, which was perfect for this application. The spindle was for said 3,500 lb hub, but with a 1-1/2" square stub. This allowed 2" square tubing to slip right over it. Although not necessary, I drilled holes in the 2" square tubing to get some more welds.

Attachment is via 1/4" steel plate with 7/16" bolts.

Figured with all the tire upgrades people are doing, I'm probably not the only person dealing with a much heavier spare.

Looks like a lot of added weight to the rear bumper?

Probably 50 lbs more. For me, the more the better. I am tongue heavy.

I wish I had the metalworking skills to do that. Looks great.
