coleman ac capacitor?

I have a coleman mach 15 not working, well the fan is but not the compressor kicks in it drops out and throw s the breaker, I just had a major power problem converter fried lost transfer switch.
Anyway what's the chance that the capacitor are blown cause I have a 3 peace capacitor hit I believe that it has a hard start .the hard start kit does it include the capacitor, ,
Are do I need to all three. I don't have a meter that does mf.

If you had the right meter you could tell in a few seconds if the cap is bad.

The capacitor is referred to as a "Starting capacitor" to get the motor turning.

From your description, it sounds like your compressor motor starts but only runs a moment or two and then pops the breaker. It sounds like the start capacitor is doing its job getting the compressor going and something else is drawing to much current.

Hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in as I am just a Shade tree mechanic.

Well I can get the fan to run but when I turn it on cool it want come on at all everything shuts down. So what do you all think. Brad in Daytona Beach, Florida

You should start by checking the capacitor. If that's good then my next step is to check for proper voltages to the compressor. Next step would be ohm out the windings. Another is a bad connection? I've seen open capacitors on the compressor side trip a breaker in a residential application.

Many high load motors, in this case the compressor is the motor, use not only a starting capacitor, but also a run capacitor. Whether you have a run capacitor or not, depends on the unit. If you do have a run capacitor, and it is bad, this could be the cause of your problem. It would be best to have a tech that knows A/C's check this unit.

Capacitors are electricity storage units and are very dangerous best leave the testing to the pro's. They can be ohm tested if discharged but it's not safe to even touch them unless they are discharged.
