We finally decided to upgrade our tow vehicle, we had a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Megacab 5.7 Hemi that only had a 7300lb tow rating.. Our new Laredo 291TG had a GVWR of 8300lbs, towing heavy made me really nervous, so we upgraded to a brand new 2015 Ram 2500 with the Cummins Turbo Diesel with a 17,200lb tow rating.. I'm loving the new truck and this thing has awesome power..

Bowhunter,

Congratulations on the new truck. I'm sure you'll enjoy it !!!

Now, once you've had a chance to tow a few times, would you be so kind as to offer your impressions on the differences in towability of your half ton vs the new truck? It may help some others who are towing "at or over" their maximums.

Thanks, and again, congratulations !!!

I've been extremely happy with my 15 Ram Cummins. It's night and day difference coming from the Hemi.

Good luck with the new truck! The silver is really sweet!

Thanks for the complements everyone, I got the bedliner in and added an Extang Emax tonneau cover.. I am looking into some nerf bars/side steps to help my wife and kids get up in the truck, the new one sits up much higher then my old Megacab.. I almost have 500 miles on and my first pull will be this weekend out to the Salem/Lisbon KOA.. I'll chime in later to view my thoughts on pulling with diesel vs. gas..

If you're anything like me, you won't be able to wipe the silly grin off your face. I still can't. I have no regrets about the 3 years spent towing with the 1/2 ton. We camped somewhere in Texas (nothing was off-limits) every month during those years. At the time, it is what we could afford, we were within our weight limits, but it had its limitations. With time, saving and wise management of our money (and a little luck to find just the right used truck), we made the upgrade in a cash transaction. This month's trip to Colorado would not have been near as relaxing (if possible at all) with the '09 1/2 ton.

Safe travels.

I have the exact truck even down to the color. Pulled our 7000 pound travel trailer out to South Dakoda with ease. New FW puts a load on but handles it very well. Looking back makes me nervous about how close I was to over weight with the 1500 I had. 13000 trouble free miles on the Cummins.

Sorry it has been awhile since I started this thread, I have been very busy with work.. First I'd like to thank everyone for the complements. Second my old 06 Megacab 1500 actually sat on a 3/4 ton suspension, except it had one less leaf in the rear leaf springs, everything under the body way 3/4 ton.. It has a towing capacity of 7300lbs with 3.73 gear ratio. Our old 23' hybrid came in 6k fully loaded, it wasn't bad towing but you definatley knew it was back there and sometimes a struggle on the bigger hills for the 5.7 hemi, hitting 4500 to 5000rpm's and only doing 45mph.. We picked up the new Laredo 291TG in late March, 6700lbs dry and an 895lb tongue weight, GVWR of 8400 and a more realistic tongue weight of 1000lbs, I didn't even bother trying to tow with my Mega cab, we used my brother 06 2500 Quadcab that had a 8800lb tow rating.. Then came the truck shopping, it took me months to find the exact one, in the exact color I wanted.. Now for the verdict, towing with diesel 3'4 ton is so much more a joy then with gas.. The same hills I struggled with in my Megacab, I ran right up with the Cummins at 1500RPM's doing 65mph+.. The new truck has a tow capacity of 17250lbs and to be honest the truck really doesn't even know the trailer it back there.. It's kinda of like a Clydesdale horse pulling a baby carriage.. Also with the addition of the diesel exhaust break, going down hill is a lot easier also, the turbo does most of the work and you barley have to touch the brakes..

Looking Good! We used to have a Passport 300BH that I towed with my old 1500 Ram Hemi. I definitely "felt" it behind the truck. Now with our new sprinter and towing with my Ram 2500, sometimes I have to check my mirror and make sure the rig is still back there. I just don't feel it.
